2003 v6 to 4.7v8 swap

Looking for a new engine for my 2003 since the v6 quit. Would like to put a v8 out of a 04 4Runner in. How difficult is this what is all needed besides the engine,computer and wiring harness

An enormous amount of work, by the time you purchased all the pieces needed for this and the labor involved, I think you would come out cheaper to buy a T4R with a V8 or just put a V6 back in it.

I'm replying again because you didn't state if you have a 2WD or 4WD, it will not change my opinion either way, but if you have 4WD you would have a different driveline than the V8 would have, the V6 4WD T4R can be shifted into 2WD the V8 4WD T4R cannot be shifted into 2WD it is full time 4WD being only able to shift either into Lo or Hi range.

I also feel like I’ve seen a thread here where someone did a swap and they never got the engine to work right because of wiring/computer issues.

Noting that I've only glossed over the complete repair manual from Toyota... I suspect that every system and sub-system related to moving the vehicle forward and backwards would have to be modified; almost every chapter of the repair manual had a duplicate for both engine types, so I would expect there's differences to be tracked down for each.

It would be easier to get a factory fit/finish/function from the 4.7L (obviously because it came in the truck). But I think it'd be just as much work as doing a Lexus 4.6L or just some blasphemy/butchery like an LS swap.

Either way, there's some real wiring and CANBUS nightmares to brave to do any swap in these trucks... a few have done stuff though, I think there's a 6speed V6 4th gen out there, which is really cool.

Almost anything can be done, with enough time and money. But in this case, swap a used V6 into it, or sell it and buy a V8. You'll be further ahead, time- and money-wise. Fewer headaches, as well.

It sounds like it's just a blown head gasket? I'm curious as well.

11-23-2017, 05:44 PM Hey, I am pretty new to this forum so this might have been discussed before. I have a 2003 4Runner v6 with 190,000 miles and I believe the head gasket went. Everything I have read states that the engine needs to be pulled to replace. Is this true? Can it be done with out removing engine or is it easier to just pull it. Thanks

It was a blown head gasket. Plus it looks like the valve hit the piston. We really just need to get the 4Runner to sell. Don’t want to sink to much money in it rebuilding the engine.

If a valve hit the piston you have other issues then just a head gasket.

Get the best deal you can on a V6 from a savage yard and install it, make sure it's from the same year if possible but within a year or so should work.
