2003 V8, new noise...

This clacking noise started about a month ago and has not gotten worse (or better)--2003 V8 with 179K miles.

Normally, the engine ran very quiet and I started to notice the noise when I was in an enclosed space with my window down, like in my office parking garage.

Anyone have an idea? I would like to get ahead of any upcoming problem as I plan on keeping this truck for a while longer.

Even if it's not fixable without a complete engine overhaul, I'd like to know what I'm facing so I can gauge how long this truck will be reliable.

Sorry but I can't tell where the noise is coming from in the video. Try using a homemade stethoscope or purchase one from Harbor Freight for $4 to pinpoint the location of the noise.

Yeah, it's not ideal. It's definitely coming from the crankcase, not an exhaust leak or anything.

It sounds like valves to me and not piston slap or the like. I'll try your idea and see if I can pinpoint it more. I was hoping a more experienced ear than mine would be able to recognize it right away.

In the video it definitely sounds like valve noise. I think the V6 has a similar sound that's "normal", but I'm pretty sure my V8 doesn't sound like that.

I agree, it didn't sound like this until about 2-3 months ago. What is the V6 issue?

It sounds like valvetrain noise to me. Mine makes a similar noise at idle - albeit quieter. Pretty much always has.

Oil has about 4K miles on it, I'll go ahead and change. I have used Royal Purple since about the 10th oil change.

With my V8 the only valve train ticking noise I have ever had is when I used a very restrictive oil filter. I think it was a Purolator plus or something like that. Then I went back to using Toyota filters and have never had the noise since.

I'll have to check which filter I used this time.

I think the manual calls for valve adjustment @ 100k miles.
