I have just been offered a replacement of AC compressor and clutch by the dilership's service department. Conditioner starts vorking and quits after a minute or two. I thought it might need a new air filter or something, but not the new AC unit. Granted , I got 70k mi on the truck. but still. this is my third toyota, and they used to be a bit more reliable... Any takes on it? Could they be wrong?

Sounded like what my old '86 was doing...turned out to be a bad amp on the A/C board behind the glove box. I doubt the compressor would go bad that fast. I have a hunch you'll have the same problem afterwards, or some mechanic will finally figure out something is wrong w/ the electronics controlling the AC. Sounds to me you dealer doesn't know what it's doing and/or is trying to collect warranty $$ from Toyota USA. Honda did this to me...wife didn't tighten the gas cap all the way, so a check engine light came on. The cap wasn't bad, just it wasn't tightened all the way. Dealer insisted on replacing the cap and billing Honda USA for the repair.
