2004 4.7L V8 4x4 4Runner transmission swap

Hi all. I posted this earlier on a new thread (2011) but was not sure it was the right place:

Hi everyone. This is my first time commenting here though I have been reading on this site for a few years. I have a 2004 4Runner 4.7L V8. My transmission cooling tubes sprang a leak in traffic on the highway and the transmission ran dry and fried. Too bad- this was not a reliability issue bud a bad luck and no fluid issue. Anyway, my question is can I replace the transmission with a 2003 dipstick model? Mine is a 2004 "sealed" unit. All the parts sites say they are interchangeable and that the older dip stick model is a "match" for my vehicle. Anyone know for sure? I assume that the 4Runner's computer might be specifically matched to one model or another. Basically I was assured that the transmission I bought was sealed and when it arrived it had the dip stick. It has low miles (relatively speaking) and looks pretty clean and if it is fine to swap them, I'd rather do that than ship it back and wait for another one. Thank you!

[MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] probably knows best, [MENTION=84120]nevada[/MENTION] too, but i believe the tranny has a control module that would need to come with it in order to control it. physically mating the two is probably easy
 
Oooh... that's gonna be a tough one. I believe they aren't interchangeable because the viscocity of WS ATF and older Type IV ATF are slightly different as are the internal component's materials (at least according to Toyota.) I honestly would talk to the company that shipped the transmission and have them ship you the correct unit for your year, I can't definitively tell you anything one way or the other because I don't have enough specific information between the two units (i.e clutch material differences, seal differences if any, ect.) despite them being listed as both A750x units. So It might work without an '03 ECM (which may cause problems if installed in an '04 or may not) or it may not shift correctly at all...

You ever figure aything out on this?

My 04 blew the front seal on the trans and pumped itself dry...by the time it slipped it was already too late and fried itself.

Anyway, I also bought a low mileage 03 and I'm in the process of swaping it right now. Going to flush all of the old ws out of the cooler and run type IV and try it.

Hello "TR4", i'm new here. I've searched but I'm not finding answers, only conflicting info.

I'm trying to find out if the 08 4runner A750 transmission will work (swap into) in a 2003 4 Runner?

If So! Can AT oil pan be swapped to kept dip stick on the 03 if desired?

A little history:

I'm coming over from ih8mud forum. I typically only work on 100 and 200 series Toyota's (Land Cruiser, LX 470 & LX 570) restoring for myself and working on them for others in the area. I've good mechanical skills and tools.

I have ad on CL in Denver selling 08 4Runner limited 4WD 5AT engine 2UZ-fe VVTi and transmission A750 along with other Lexus GX470 and Toyota Land Cruiser VVT engine parts.

A local buyer with an 03 4 Runner sport 4WD 5AT w/4.7L (non VVT) wishes to buy my 08 A750 transmission and have me install it for him. I should just sell the transmission and be done with it. But that is not my style. I like buyers of my rigs and or parts to be happy, so I'd like to make sure it will fit his needs.

Here what I know about the A750 transmission:
It's made by Toyota 51% owned AW (Aisin-warner)
Dipstick was removed the second year (04) that the A750 transmission was used in the 100 series, and assume the same in of 4 Runner.

I also know the fluid was change to Dexron VI in 03 from III or II with the introduction of the 5spd,
That IV is a blended synthetic/conventional.
That in 2004 (second year)Toyota came out with the A750 without dipstick and the WS ATF (World Standard)
That in the 2004-05 A750 Toyota had issue with breather allowing moisture in fluid (IIRC). Resulting in a low speed (35 MPH up hill) shutter issue resulting in a TSB. That flushing (full 12qt) ATF fluid has be reported to correct issue.
That WS is made by Exxon for Toyota and the aftermarket (aftermarket not sold in USA)

I've no real concern with flushing and using WS ATF if I swap to the newer transmission. My concern is compatibility of; mounts, transference-case adapter, in/output shafts, electronics, pan, linkage, etc...

BTW: I've offered to drive across town and look at the buyers 4Runner. I'm not so sure he's a blown trany. As he thinks the fluid he lost replacing radiator caused it to burn up. If that all the fluid he lost I doubt it was cause. I've done 3 radiator R&R in last 12 months and only lost ~1/3 to 1/2 qts. Of course it possible it was already low or ATF piping for coolant in radiator was cracked/leaking into ATF fluid and vis versa.

Hello I came accross your post and I'm looking for some parts for my 4runner. I replaced the radiator and did not realize that the transmission fluid had leaked out. Luckily I did not drive it very far but possibly caused some damage to the transmission. There is a small chance that the tps sensor is what's causing the problem. When putting the vehicle in gear it revs but doesn't have much power. Reverse is the only gear that was working normally so I had it towed back home. Do you have any thoughts on this? If like to buy your tps sensor. How much are you asking for it? And is it a very difficult piece to swap out? Thanks for your time

Hello ****,

Assuming you’ve the V8 2UZ-fe VVTi engine (2UZ-fe VVTi). There are two TPS one is engine (on throttle body) the other is in gas pedal. If the engine RPM is going up and down normally, when you work the gas pedal by pressing and releasing it, while transmission shifter in “P” or “N”. Then I don’t think it’s one of your TP sensors. You’ll normal get a CEL (check engine light) when a TP sensor goes bad. If shifting into “R” and vehicle moves in reverse, but the forward gears (“D”, 1,2,3) do not work as normal. This sound like transmission.

Throttle body with TPS $50. (Retail new OEM ~$500)
Accelerator pedal with TPS $40. (Retail new OEM ~$150)
Transmission with transfer case extension housing $300. (Retail new OEM ~$3,000)

I can install for you. Transmission is a big job that takes a day or two. Other two can be done quickly. New OEM Toyota gasket for throttle body (TB) should be replaced with TB R&R.

Ended up putting an 03 transmission into my 04.

Purged the old fluid out of the cooler and put in the correct type IV in the older trans.

Everything works and shifts like it should! Everything bolted up and plugged in and now I have a dipstick tube...

Thank you, that is helpful.

I found a difference in the AT case part number between 03 & 08. But could be something small, like the up-dated breather tube.

I've spoken to two gear heads locally that are converting a 100 series into manual transmission. They feel all years A750F's should be interchangeable in GX470, LX470, 100 series, Tundra, Sequoia and 4runner.

But still I'm hoping to find someone that knows for sure if 08 AT swaps to 03 4Runner platform?
