2004 4Runner exhaust manifold dilemma

Hello everybody,
New to forum here...I bought my 2004 V8 4runner last year and love it. When I purchased it last spring I invested a bit and changed timing belt, water pump, brakes, put new Toyota suspension on it, spark plugs, tires. Now the truck has 215.000 KM (not miles) on it and runs like a dream, but I hear that driver's side exhaust manifold is leaking a bit, especially when engine is cold. Now I have a question...my mechanic that I trust here in Ontario will replace both manifolds (aftermarket) for $2250 all in. I am worried if I keep driving it without repair it will damage something or we can get CO poisoning while driving it in the cabin (no smell now). I have 3 options: 1) leave it as it is and keep driving it,2) fix it or 3) sell the truck and look for something else. Would it be wise to keep investing in it since the truck is 11 years old with 215000 km on it? Just trying to get anybody's input. Thank you!

That's only 133k miles, right? I'd fix it if it was mine but would give serious thought to headers too.

Don't worry about that, no way it would happen. If yours is anything like mine and 100,000s of others, the ticking sound goes away when it warms up. Thats the metal expanding and closing the gap. Even still, it would take forever to get enough CO in your car to harm you through that small leak. You're good.

Replace those if you like, but not out of safety concern.

You can get aftermarket manifolds from amazon.

I have bought pacesetter manifolds for about 240$ each plus 100$ studs and nuts. Took me 2 days to replace them by myself.


Try to ask other shop. They should be able to replace both of them in 10 hours

I would follow CXS, look into headers, you will have to upgrade your cats, or cut the old ones off and re-weld them to the headers(at least I have to in Califrownia!) to pass emission testing. I found some Doug Thorleys on ebay for 320 ish. So a great option.

Thank you all for your replies! I am convinced to keep my 4runner now hopefully it will run for another 50-70K miles...I will look into pacesetters or headers as was mentioned here. Is it safe to drive the truck with existing manifold crack for 3-4 months before repair? Just don't want to damage the engine, etc before I can afford the fix in September-October. Thanks again for your input !!!

Nothing bad will happen. But I couldn't drive my car with annoying tick noise

I have a set of pacesetters sitting on my workbench, how did they turn out for you?

Thinking about doing the job solo, did you run into any noteworthy issues?
