Tough call as I am in the same situation. Mine are not the OG's like yours, but my wife drove the piss out of the 4Runner when we first got it and it needed new tires in 06' with 56,700 on the originals. I am still on the tires from 06' with 90,200 so that puts the tires at only 33,500 with another 20k to go at least and can probably run them another 3-4yrs based on tread wear and not age.

I had a set of Michelin Cross Terrains with plenty of tread left when I replaced them at around the 5 year mark - they were showing some signs of wear on the sidewalls.
Would rather not risk a blowout or other catastrophic failure due to old rubber.

I recently bought an '06 Limited with 172,000 km. It still had the original Cross Terrains on it. First thing I did was replace the tires.
Here it is while still wearing the Cross Terrains. The Cross Terrains were so badly worn that just putting the new tires on gave me a 1" lift.

Get rid of them at that age, regardless of tread depth. Too many variables WRT side wall, cracking and wear to take the chance.
In addition when you buy new, check the Mfr date to make sure you're not buying old tires that the dealer / shop is trying to get rid of.
My Father-in-law worked for Good Year for 25 years, Yokahama for 2 and has been with Nokian for the past 5.
I get free tires and he still recommends 5 yrs max despite mileage.

172,000 Km is amazing for a set of tires. I know Michelins usually wear well, but that is remarkable.

I'd change them at five years if i got free tires as well. Heck three years just to be safe :hiding:

Lol, yes it certainly makes it an easy decision. He is retiring this year so I will be paying again next change over.
Without a doubt you should be concerned. The last thing you want is a tire to come apart because of their age. There is no chance I would ride in someone's car if I knew they were running on 12 year old tires. The problem is that you won't know when they will give out. There is nothing to indicate when they will separate. There is a good chance that when it happens that it will destroy the side of your 4runner or worse you could crash. It really isn't worth the $800 risk.
