2004 blower motor

My blower motor (or something that acts on it) is acting up. One morning, it just wouldn't go, I pulled the relay and put it back in and it worked again. Next day same thing, only this time the fan only runs on hi. Since I haven't had the problem getting the fan to run, but in auto or manual, regardless of what the display reads, it is either on high, or off. I tried the relay in another 4 runner, no problems. I find info about the older runners resistors causing a problem like this, but no idea where or how to check an '04?

Apparently on the 4th gen 4runner the part that used to be the resistor (which regulates the speed of the blower motor) is now a blower motor controller. The resistor is still used on the tacoma but the 4 runner must need the controller for the auto feature on HVAC controls. Resistor $30, Blower motor control $200!
