2004 limited 4unner need shocks??

hey guys,

i have 100k on my oem shocks and i think its time to replace them. just wondering, what is a good setup to look for? i want a comfortable ride similar to stock ride. i dont 4wheel nor do i want to lift it. the 4runner is mainly for weekend use. im thinking about getting the bilstein struts/shocks.

The bilsteins are an excellant shock. But the ride will feel slightly stiffer. It depends on how nice your roads are. You will feel more of the small bumps like road cracks going from one side of the road to the other. However, If the roads are worse than that, they will soak up everything else and you will have much more control. The ass end will not shake as much when hitting a series of bumps. If you are strictly a "nice road" person, then I would probably pass on the bilstiens. It depends on how soft you want the ride. The other option would be to try and find a set of bilstiens that someone has taken off of their FJ cruiser. Those factory bilstiens should be a little more road friendly than the standard aftermarket ones.
 
Bilstein 5100 series man, for sure! They are amazing! They were doing buy 3 get the 4th free and may still be doing that.

If you like the stock ride, then you should definitely stick with stock shocks!! All Bilsteins will stiffen up the ride significantly!
 
thanks for all the comments guys. one of the reasons i was gonna go with the bilsteins was because of the price range ($300 + install). i didnt know the ride would get that noticable less comfortable. as for the oem shocks, yes i like the feel of that ride. but i doubt the dealer would quote me $300 for a set of those.

Toy OEM are good shocks. What makes you think you need to relpace? Are you noticing anything in the ride? Have you actually tested the rebound on your current shocks?
Just trying to possibly save you from spending some money you don't have to.

sorry i didnt give too much details originally. but i went in and get 4 discs and pads replaced. the shop reccomened to replace the shocks as the rears are leaking. i do notice alot of squeeking noise coming from the front and rear.

I don't know about KYB. However, back in 2002 when i was searching for shocks to improve my ride (on a 3rd gen 4runner), i read that KYB MONOTUBE shocks were even stiffer than Bilsteins. I went with Bilsteins at the time...and then eventually switched back to OEM shocks. I heard that Monroe Sensatrac provides the closest OEM ride while being relatively cheap. Remember, this is from 2nd, 3rd, 4th hand information...so, take it with a big grain of salt.

Another CHEAP alternative is to buy FJ Cruiser shocks. They are available on Ebay or FJcruiserforums.com for cheap. You can buy the regular ones or the Toyota Bilstein TRD version. (In the past, Toyota TRD Bilsteins were NOT the same as the aftermarket Bilsteins, even on the same truck. The Toyota version was less stout than the aftermarket version, but provided a better ride.)

Hell, if the price is right, then you might as well buy the FJ shocks and springs together and give yourself a nice small lift to your truck! :)

:iagree: with the FJ shock recommendation whole heartedly. The GR2's are a low pressure, twin tube, smooth riding OE style shock. I've put them on two different vehicles over the years and found them to be very nice for road driving. An enthusiastic, sporty driver would find them a touch soft, a little too close to OE. The KYB monotubes can be stiff...

thanks for looking out for me man. those guys are in socal and im in norcal. but i prefer NIB stuff which the shop can warranty. the LTD 4runner is driven by my sig other as her daily driver and i dont know how she would feel about getting used items. :awais:

Ahhh, that makes sense...i don't know anything about the twin-tube KYBs.

Ahhh, i see. Well, those examples are really low mileage shocks...and well worth it for the money savings. But, i understand your viewpoint about NIB stuff...because i am like you for most cases.

Should be a long time...well past 50k miles i would think due to monotube design.
