2004 Limited Radio

Folks,

I have a 2004 4runner limited (purchased used). I'm surprised that the unit installed in this vehicle is the base unit (single CD/cassette). I don't see JBL anywhere on the speaker grills.

Was it an option to get the JBL system with 6 cd changer?

Also, can someone explain exactly what RDS is? I have what looks to be an LCD looking screen behind my center dome light, but have no headsets or remote controls.

Maybe I'm just not understanding something!

Open the tailgate and look behind the passenger rear wheelwell. If you have the JBL system there will be an 8" speaker (subwoofer) behind the plastic side piece. You should see a finned aluminum box just forward of the speaker but mounted on the sub enclosure. This is the JBL power amplifier for the whole truck. There should be a small speaker on both sides of the tailgate. In 2004 the only marking that lets you know you have the JBL system is on the radio upper right hand corner. I believe the single disk system was the only one available that year. The thing behind the dome light is the rear seat entertainment system and needs earphones and a remote to operate. I have seen the earphones on EBAY for cheap but you may have to get the remote from Toyota. You might try looking for it in the hidden glove box above the normal glovebox. Also if you hold in the rt radio knob you should see a setting for surround. Try turning that on and see how it sounds. I would buy an owners manual.

OK. I get that I don't have the JBL system. Nothing in the right compartment of the rear tailgate. Just weird that this was not standard on the Limited.

Nothing in the hidden glove box compartment either.

So, even if I don't have the JBL system, I possibly still have rear system entertaiment?
 
Yes that option was available w/the standard radio. So you have the mirrors then on either side of the tailgate?

I don't mean to sound stupid, but I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "mirrors".

If it's my understanding of what they are, then no.

If you open the tailgate and stick your head in then turn around looking out the rear opening to the left and right there should either be a mirror on each side or a a speaker.

You must have one or the other. Mirrors= basic stereo and speakers= JBL

RDS just means that the radio can display the artist/song name or any other information that an FM station is broadcasting on the display of your radio. If you only have the standard radio or the JBL with single disc, you do not have that feature.
 
Just checked. No speakers, no mirrors.

Could it be because I have 3rd row seats?

Could be that the seat belts are at the spot that the speakers/mirrors should be.

I never saw a 4Runner with third row but it is possible. If you want, post a picture here.

I can do that shortly... but just so I know.... I'm looking to take a picture of the back end of the vehicle facing back from the drivers seat. Specifically, I'm looking at the inside just to the right and left of the tailgate door (upper half), right?

Yes, you want to get the upper right and upper left.
 
I believe the '04 was the first year 3rd row seats were offered, and yes - this is why you don't have speakers or mirrors on those rear columns.
