2004 T4R 4.0 won't start

My son got in his 2004 V-6 4Runner this morning and the check engine light came on along with the VCS / VSC Trac lights. I told him to drive one of the other cars to work just in case there was an issue. BTW, he drove home yesterday and it was pouring the rain but doubt that has anything to do with it. So I started it up later this morning and sure enough the lights were on. I went to work and came home to try it again and now the thing won't start. It just turns over and over but will not fire. Any ideas what it could be?

BTW, when I turn the key, and let off it, the starter keeps going until I turn it to the off position.

Disregard, I got it. I came home and my wife was out there trying to start it with a key that didn't have a chip so obviously it wouldn't start. Got the regular key and it fired right up. Also unplugged the battery and the lights went off. Mods, feel free to delete.

Something to note.

When the Immobilizer system has not verified the key being use by the car (or can't verify it for whatever reason) the Security Light will still flash even when you insert the key into the ignition.

When it is normally function, the moment a valid key is inserted into the cylinder and is recognized, the Security Light will no longer flash.

I wouldn't disregard those lights that came on...disconnecting the battery will get rid of the annoying lights for a while but won't remedy the source of the problem.

Sometimes if you try cranking the vehicle with the wrong key it will set a few "Key not recognized DTCS" and occasionally some "failed to start, ect." DTCs despite the fact the ECM was told by the Immobilizer to turn off the fuel injectors.

I agree 100%. If and when the light comes on again, I'm going to find out what code it's throwing. The light came on a few months ago for one day and then went off and never came back on until yesterday. Hoping it's not the misfire on the #6 code. We had that happen to another 04 and it was a head gasket. If we get another 4th Gen, it will be a V-8.

I hope it's not your head gasket as well, I have an '04 with 123,000 on it. So I'm in the "range". Like a ticking time bomb... :behindsofa:

This one is at 168,000 miles and the other one went at 155,000. I have a 93 FZJ80 Land Cruiser and he has the T4R with the 4.0 so we both have to keep our fingers crossed on head gaskets. The pesky heater hose is what normally get the land cruisers so it's been taken care of.

Light is back on and it's running rough after starting up when it sets all night, going to pull code tomorrow but I am afraid it's another head gasket. What the heck is going on with the 4.0 and the head gaskets? This will be two 4Runners in the last 6 months with bad head gaskets if that's the case. I'm hoping and praying it's not but it sure has the symptoms.

Code is Cyl #4 misfire. Going to move the ignition coil from #4 to another cyl and see if it throw the check engine and hopefully will show up on that cyl. After that we'll try the spark plugs and after that probably need to pressure check it and see if we have another bad head gasket. I sure hope that's not it

Something to note.

Just read this because my vehicle wouldn't start sometimes and it happened again today after I spent some money on parts I obviously didn't need.

After reading this, tried both keys: with one the security light turns off, the other one it stays one. Problem solved. Thanks.

The funnier thing is the key that works is one that Toyota made for me because they temporarily lost my keys. They found them, so I got a free key.

Did you end up with a bad head gasket ?
