2005 4Runner crapped the bed this morning!!

they have the anti grind feature...


Tell me about wiring up a remote start or fixing something in the cold. Up here I had to do that a couple times. I had a nice wool hat on, and a big coat.. shaking and shivering and crawling underneath a dash. What a disaster. Never doing that again!

That's true though, most dealers like to look at the aftermarket's fault. :mad:
then the customer comes back yelling at us, we take it out and it still doesn't work send it back to the dealer and then the dealer realizes that it's not that problem, and trys to fix it.

(VW... a notorious company for after market install leads to problems.... installers try to avoid VW's)

No grinding noise. It also has the crank and hold feature, if you turn the key to 'Start' and quickly let go, it will start up the engine for you, unlike typical cars where it would stall if you let the key go too quickly.
 
Supposedly the diagnosis that I was told was that there were little ice chunks that were in my gas tank and when the gas was taken into the fuel pump the ice chunks clogged it thus not allowing any gas into the system and then causing a mis-firing of my engine which then cut it out for safety reasons. It was cold that day but since they put the dry gas into it the Runner runs as smooth as silk now so I guess I did have quite a bit of water in there. I dropped it off this morning for the repair and I spoke with the service mgr. He said that the new fuel intake is bigger around which will allow more fuel into the system in case the ice chunking happens again. The mgr stated it happened to a Sienna about 2-3 weeks ago and Toyota California was aware that this was happening which is why they redesigned the intake some time ago. It was quite scary if you ask me since it happened twice when I was on the highway. If your in warmer climate you have nothing to worry about. But here in NY we had some pretty cold nights, some below zero, and it just happens now. I don't know...but I can't complain as long as they fix whatever is wrong.
 
Dealership believes that I either had a bad tank of gas from the gas station that may of had some water in it and it was a buildup of condensation. I don't know what to tell you but it runs like a top now...

But now I see that it could have been water? A very rare thing today. Each gas pump has water separators in them. I guess they need some periodic maintenance? If so than I would never buy gas from there again.
 
In past decade most fuel systems have switched over to returnless delivery. This means fuel does not return from the rail back to the tank and therefore tank fuel does not warm up during operation. The water by the way is heavier than fuel and sits on the bottom on the tank. Icing during running is possible but one needs to get a lot of water in the tank and then some agitation to break up the ice in order to plug up the inlet filter.

With the extent of mis-fire suspected, on board computer diagnostic flags should have been set and perhaps these were read by the dealer to aid support for the root cause.
 
Nope, no kickback or anything. Just a grinding sounds and then you could feel the engine cut out and I coasted maybe 10 feet and that was about it. My foot was on the gas pedal but I wasn't going anywhere.

I'd LOVE to hear Toyota try to explain how fuel starvation could cause loud grinding sounds. I'm actually quite shocked they didn't try to tell you intermittent grinding sounds were "normal". That's Toyota's favorite word.
 
I would suspect that if ice really did clog that inlet tube to the pump then the noise heard could have been cavitation, from the pump being starved of fluid???
 
My dad had a similar problem with his 2004 V6. On the freeway the trac light and ebs light started linking like crazy and the car came to a hault. Luckely he was next to an exit and got right off.

dealer said... "Can Not Duplicate"

was towed to the dealership, dealer said that it was a tank of bad gas. was hard to believe because they said that it was diesel in my gas tank, i didn't fill diesel, and where i filled up doesn't even sell diesel. but they said it smelled like it, hmm.. not sure..

so they drained the tank, filled it, charged me as they said since it was fuel related that it wasn't covered under warranty.

needless to say, i'm not going back to that dealership, and here's why.

after they're supposed fix, i didn't drive it for about a month as i went home from christmas break and the truck sat in the garage at my apt at school. i probably drove about 60 miles before i went on break after i got it back though. hard to drive a lot during finals week. when i went back, i drove it for a tank, and then filled up again. it happened another three times. after that it stopped, hasn't done it since. it initially happened 6 times, and is why i had it towed to the dealership. 6 times within 10 minutes.

but it stopped, hasn't done it for about 2 months, so i let it be.

but then again, no signs at all. no choking, no lights, no nothing. just stalled. i'd like to bring it home and have it looked at by the dealership here, but i don't know when i can do that. maybe over the summer if i have time, and can make the 1200 mile drive home.
 
Thats strange Alpha. I did have all the lights in the world coming on. Engine just stopped, plain & simple. I wonder what the problem really was...since it has been fixed it hasn't done it since. Thank God.

what did they exactly fix? Did you hapen to ready the work order?

Grinding sounds were probably your VSC/anti-roll back/traction control systems going haywire and trying to apply the brakes. If you would like to test out the anti-rollback system to see if the sounds were related....then just pull up a steep incline and release your foot from the brake.

You will hear some awful sounding clicking, clanking and grinding noises. It will downright scarce the heck out of you the first couple of times you hear these sounds. Eventually though, you learn to trust the system and sounds from your truck. The system doesn't hold the truck totally in place if you are on a steep-steep incline though.
