Ok guys! Please let me vent it. I end up took haft of a day off from work today, after I got a phone call from the bank notified me that my loan has been approved. I was so exciting on my way to the dealer this afternoon. Sadly, I and my saleman walked through the lot, but my 4runner (suppose to) wasn't there anymore. He thought someone may take it out for a test drive. 20 minutes have gone by, we dicided to get back inside to check on inventory list. Holocow, it's no longer there. He then talked to the sale manager, turn out the vehicle was sold Monday night at the last hour. I then found out there were couple of people walk in last night asked to test drive the vehicle, minutes later they came back and made an offer exactly the amount that the dealer has offered me .....$27,400 otd. Of course, they were the winners. Now, is it just a coincident or there's someone lives here in Orlando has seen my post earlier, then got there to take over my deal. Im not mad but it's totally turn me off on the exciment of buying a new car.
Now, dealer try to sell me a SPORT V8 2WD for $ 26,899 + Tax, Tag, Title and dealer fee. But I dicided not to go with V8.

Did you put a deposit on the 4Runner to "hold" it as yours?

If so, then the dealer should give you a better deal on the next 4Runner that you're interested in buying.

If not, then I guess you just got beaten to the punch by the other buyers.

But not to worry..... there are plenty of 4Runners available out there and I'm sure you can find another one exactly the way you want it.

O.k. Let's talk for a min. Orlado resident to Orlando resident. And this from some one that worked at a dealership here in Orlando.

Toyota of Orlando has a really good ad campaign. If you have ever watched tv here in Orlando, you know that they come on at 10:30 pm at night taking about that 4runner for 22K, or the new tacoma for 12k, or a scion for 10 k.

False advertising, no. See, as long as they have one vehicle in stock in that price, then it's ok. So Toyota of Orlando takes one vehichle and prices it down so much, that you want to come into the dealership to see it. This drives their traffic. And yes, at times they are losing money on the front end of the vehicle, but they make it up in the back end, and on traffic visiting the dealership.

Watch the commercials closely, as they show the vehicles, they'll also flash a stock number below. This is for you law savvy poeple that will file suit for false advertisment or bait and switch. When you come in the next morning, that vehcle was "JUST" sold. They can track this by the stock number. Or if you call they'll tell you that they have it in stock, but when you get there, it was just sold.

They did have the vehicle and they did really just sell it. The only thing is who it got sold to. Now I know from experience that thereare people that know in advance which car is going to be marked down for the promotion, and exactly what time they must buy the car to call it a legal legitamite sale.

These buyers are called house deals, and are usually frineds of someone that works there, and so forth.

Toyota of Orlando is a good dealership. I get my servicing done there, that is not where I bought my 4runner, though.

At the right time of the month, end of year, even end of day, ANY dealership can do what ANY other dealership can. They get their cars form the same place SET (South East Toyota Distributors) for the exact same invoice price.

Keep in mind that everything is negotiable. They make money on everything, interest rates, warranties, hold back, you name it.

Everything is negotiable.

I feel your pain, it happened to me too.

I test drove the vehicle, tried to cut a deal, but couldn't come to an agreement and walked on the deal.

A month later the salesman contacted me saying that the vehicle was still in stock, and they could meet the deal that I wanted. I said great, I'll be in tomorrow. (Saturday) Came in, wrote up the paperwork, went to get the keys, and hey, no keys. Uh oh, another salesman sold the truck the night before.

I ended up getting basically the same truck that day, just in a different color. Plus, I got a couple hundred more off the price for my "trouble". I actually like the mica color better than the titanium, but I wanted to try a silver car to hide scratches.

I came out happy, and I don't think the dealer was being deceptive, since I already knew that they did have the car in stock at one time. One other reason that I didn't think they were lying, was that the first 4R I looked at had the third-seat option, which is a poor seller around here. The truck I got had a sunroof. They would have more motivation to get rid of the first truck than the one I bought.

I have heard many stories about dealers pulling the old bait-and-switch though, so be carefull.

That's the way stealship lures car buyers to them.

Tell the sales to call you if there ever be a same deal again before you get your truck somewhere else.

Sorry to hear that though.

I bought the 4Runner that way. It was getting near our big family trip and I saw this ad. Long story short, they wouldn't honor it and I started to leave, so they called the (man), you know and I know they didn't call anyone. They made part of the deal a re-bate so I had to pay an extra 25 in tax, plus wait three hours. Basically, they came through and I didn't finace through them. I hate buying cars.

As you said,
If you know how they do the business, and
The sales manager knows you it,
thing will be a lot easier.
But it may take several hours for them to know you are seriously to start to leave.

In my prior experiences, I could always get the sales managers out in 10 minutes. They are trying to make sure I can afford this expensive vehicle, the 4Runner.:bash:

When you see the vehicle you want and you leave the dealer don't expect it to be their when you come back;):

When I was 1st looking to get a 4Runner I found a black 03 loaded with everything but Nav, the dealer told me the price and everything, said when you want it come get it, I never put anything down, well Xmas and New Years passed and I went to go do the deal and the truck was gone, I was more heart broken that the only black 4Runner was gone but the dealer was willing to make me a new offer, I passed on the swap they where gonna do, I don't want a new 4Runner with 600 miles on it.

So I went to a different dealer, told them what they where gonna offer me they matched the price and gave me a 4Runner with Nav for less then the other dealer so it all works out:)

Just got to be willing to let the dealer sell you the car, when you walk in ready to buy they don't care, you have to be able to walk and not care to get the best deal you feel possible

1 at this price lol

Yeah I know what you guys mean about those "ONE AT THIS PRICE" deals. 2 weeks after they released the 4th gen in late 2002, I saw an ad for a 2003 SR5 V6 for $23,688 (one only). Yeap...I bought it...:D

I was a victim of this questionable tactic by a local Volks'bendoverandillscrewyou'wagen dealer. Never returned their calls of ignorance.

My story was the dealer had 'just' loaned the car we were looking at to a guy who wanted to drive it home at lunch and show his wife. They would most assuredly get it back pronto. Eventually the guy 'bought' it with his wife's approval. But they had another that was $500 more optioned immediately available.

I've been in the car business at a Toyota store for about 5 years now. The saying is "the car you look at today and want to think about until tomorrow is the same one someone else looked at yesterday and wanted to think about until today." It happens all the time, day in day out.

I hear a lot of negatives about buying a car on this board. That's sad. I think its one of the most fun experiences around. You can't beat getting a new ride. Fortunately, my dealership doesn't have these horror stories. We're as straight foward as you can get. We've one Toyota's President's Award numerous times and our Customer Satisfaction Ratings are among the top in the country. I just don't see why people hate BUYING new cars. And, most of the dealerships around us are just as easy to get along with. I guess things are different in other parts of the country.

That being said, don't wait and think about your new vehicle if you're right around where you want to be, because it could very well be gone the next day. If you like it, what's a few extra bucks? Who cares about throwing in this and including that? I'd still think the same way even if I didn't work at a dealership. Just my 2 cents. Have fun getting your next new one!

Thanks again guys. We (I and my family) had bought several vehicles from this dealer in the last 10 years. Thus, the last one we got from them is a 2004 Toyota Camry. The consultant sale manager is my brother's friend, and the Internet sale manager knew who I'm, so I don't think they tried to play me. Infact, they call me this morning asked if I want to get a SILVER for the same money, the answer is NO. I only want WHITE. BTW, I only deal with the sale manager both by phone or in person. He then assigned a saleman to assist me for test drive, and that's it. They promised to look out for an identical truck for me ASAP. However, I've got another quote from different dealer wants to give me the same deal, but they don't have my color. Now, I'm waiting....

Sorry to hear they sold your ride before you got there. Why didn't you want the V8?

Well! I really don't feel much different in power between the 6 and 8. The only very noticable are the exhaust sound with a liitle more torque, and the smoothness of the V8 engine. But again, my budget has been set @ $28K OTD. :(

as for the "weekend specials", during the time that I was shopping for my 4R (MAY '04), a sales rep that I've met previously at a TOY dealership didn't have the right one I was looking for, but a few days later called me back (Thurs I think) and told me that I could get a "heads up" on an advertised special that they are gonna run that Saturday morning. He wanted me to come in to snatch it before anyone else, but unfortunately, it wasn't the right color for me. BTW, it was an '04 Stratosphere Mica V8 LTD 4X4 w/NAV for only about $35k+TAX. I'm not sure how many miles were on it though, but it would've been a nice deal.

"ONE AT THIS PRICE", "DEMO ONLY (over 500 miles)", ... are often found on their ad to lure car buyers. They pay for the ad, fair enough. It is possible to find "5 at this price", or "15 at this price" ... on Detriot cars which you are unlikely to be left out.

Another purpose of these ADs, I believe, is trying to give car buyers an impression that they have lowest priced car in town, one only.

I brought the "1 at this price" ad to a local Honda deal years ago looking for a "similiar price". The sales person simply said, "read this, 1 at this price. I can call them to check if the car is still there...:D ".
They know the business very well.

I never give hard time to sales person during the negotiation. It is the sales person trying to close a deal in less than 30 minutes for a profit of $100 and making customers happy.

BTW, I feel it is a lot easier to buy a NEW truck than used one. It is fun to talk to sales people. They are always nice and with patience.

What planet are you from. I remember when I read someone saying that Honda sales people are "pond scum". Unffortunately I disagree with you, and it was re-inforced last year when I went with my parents, both 80 and they bought, or tried to buy a Honda. We meet the saleman and he spent hours only to find he went up $1,700 from what he was talking about. He had no intention of honoring his quote. We spent all day talking to a saleman that was basically pond scum. :bash:

I have to defend my words with your statement.

1. if the sales person had no patience, he would have not spent all day talking to you.

2. if the sales person was not nice, you would not want to spend all day talking to him.

Don't be mad. I got the lesson before. :bash:
My suggestion is, go to the dealership ALONE for a good deal. Don't bring your family with if possible. You can take a look at vehicle and have a test drive with your family at one dealship. Once you decide which vehicle your family want, go and talk to the same dealer or others by yourself.

. I hate buying cars.

. I hate buying cars

Used to hate buying cars like you . Until a few years ago when a Carmax new and used car dealership opened up near me (about 25 miles) They sell my favorite brand (Toyota of course) and most of all they have a big no hassle price on each car they have. They show the MSRP and then their no haggle price. I have bought four cars from them and so far I think their price is reasonable (compared to other peoples prices and buying experiences) I like the fact that I don't have to haggle and go thru all kinds of sales tactics from the sales staff. I understand they have to make a living and the dealership has to make a profit, but not at the expense of my arm and leg.

I love to shop when I really don't care if I buy or not. I've been looking at a LX470 (used) and it's pretty easy to know what the dealer has in the used LX. I know what I want for my vehicle and I also know how much I like my vehicle compared to the LX. Now if I can steal one I might get it if I can't well I'll have fun test driving and listening to all of the reasons I should let the dealer screw me on the deal. Bottomline, I'm the one making the decision and logic doesn't matter, what matters is do I want the LX and do they want to move it. I've even had sales guys tell me at that price they won't make a commission, I just smile and say that's between him and the dealer. I figure the deal I am looking for will come in May/June when the LX's will be at their lowest prices and gas will be high so it will be hard to move the big gas hog LX's :) But it's fun to kick tires until then. I enjoy it ;):
