2005 4Runner Rims on a 1999?

First off, let me say "Hello Everyone" and I love the site! Tons of info on 4Runners.

I searched, but couldn't get a good answer to my question.

I've done all kind of mods to my '86 and '95 4Runners, but not only my knowledge of rims, but my newly acquired '99 4Runner is lacking in the wheel dept. Of course it has the 29" tall tires and the "Ford Explorer" look-a-like rims, (being 2wd) neither of which I like. My question is, can I put the '05-'06 4Runner Limited Rims (the large 17" 5-spoke style rims) on my '99? I plan on purchasing the same size tires the '05 model 4Runner comes with: 265/65/17.

Will I have any issues w/ running this setup?

They will fit with no problems. Lots of people have done this. I think there was just a thread the other day about this with some pictures.

Should be no problem. Plenty of clearance. I have the 05' Sequoia Limited wheels and tire combo on my 2001 SR5. Looks and rides great.
 
Not sure of the backspacing but i know they will fit. You could probably run 265/70/17 stock without problems.
 
GYoter, thanks for the picture! However I couldn't pull up the other link w/ the 4Runner w/ sport edition 6 spoke rims or the tundra/sequoia wheels. Do you happen to have another pic?

Wow, thanks for showing me the pic of the 3rd gen 4Runner w/ the '05 4Runner rims! I'll definitely have to agree w/ you and say that's not a good look. I would've just blown $750.00 on some rims that don't even look good on a '99 4Runner. Instead, I'll just upgrade my "Explorer look-a-like" rims to the ones the guy in the 1st pic originally had. That looks much better.

yeah the tundra weels look much better. My dad has a tundra and the weels are like the second link but they are a dark silver, almost gunmetal and 17". they would match my factory 2 tone perfect. I'm trying to talk him in to selling them to me, no far no luck
 
Just a side note that if your Runner has the 225/75 tires you are probably running 3.909 gears. If you put the larger rims and 31" equivilant tires on, your effective gearing will be like 3.53, which might feel like a power loss. Also, your rpm's and speedo will be off. Just a heads up.

Spot on. I went from the 225/75/15 to 16x8 wheels on 265/75/16 tires and I def feel loss of power. It's only noticable on inclines on the highway or when I have people in the truck. I have a very difficult time going over 70 mph. On straightaways, I can go over 90 mph. Bad thing is also the loss in mpg. I'm down to 15 and even less on some fillups vs. 17 -18 stock.

Wow, I didn't realize you'd loose that much all around the board. Originally, I thought about going with 265/70/16, but instead, I might just go with 265/75/15s. It will still be a power loss, but maybe not as much.

Well, since I have what I consider the "baby" tires (225/75/15) and I probably have the 3.909 gears, what gears do the 4Runners that come with the 265/70/16 and 31"s have? Maybe I can just up my gear size.
 
4Runners that came with 31" tires (265/70/16) came with either 4.10 or 4.30 gears, (most with 4.30 gears had the rear electronic locker). A gear ratio calculation will tell you that if you go from 28" tires with 3.909 gears to 31" tires, you should change your gears to 4.30.

Also, I believe a 265/75/15 tire is about 30.6" which would be rounded up to 31", so it's the same size as a 265/70/16 tire.

I'm going to regear soon to 4.56 or 4.88's. This should bring me to stock. I'm also thinking of 33's in the future so both gear ratios should work.
