2005 Jeep Liberty Diesel and Six-Speed Manual Information

Auburn Hills, MI - The 2.8-liter CRD is among today's advanced diesel engines that emit 60 percent less emissions than diesel engines of 20 years ago," said Craig Love, Vice President - Rear Wheel Drive Product Team and Core Team Leader. "Additionally, the noise, vibration and harshness issues that plagued older diesel-powered vehicles have been dramatically reduced in the Liberty diesel. The result is that the legendary capability of the Jeep Liberty reaches a new level of performance with the 2.8-liter diesel engine."

The Jeep Liberty is the first mid-size sport-utility vehicle available with a diesel engine in the U.S. The 2.8-liter CRD boasts three best-in-class stats: 295 lb-ft of torque (400 Nom) @ 1,800 rpm; driving range of approximately 500 miles; and towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The engine produces 160 horsepower and gets an estimated fuel economy of 22 miles city and 27 miles highway.

The 2.8-liter CRD is an enhanced version of the four-cylinder diesel engine currently offered on this vehicle in Europe. VM Motori, which is owned in part by Detroit Diesel, a DaimlerChrysler company, is the manufacturer of the engine. VM Motori has been supplying the Chrysler Group diesel engines since 1992 for minivans and Jeep products sold in Europe.

The 2.8-liter diesel uses an advanced common rail direct injection fuel system. Direct injection of fuel into an open combustion chamber is more efficient than a pre-chamber indirect injection configuration. The system in the 2.8-liter CRD operates at fuel pressures nearly 70 percent above the older distributor pump systems, producing finer atomization, leaner combustion and higher power. At the same time, direct injection provides inherently lower engine-out hydrocarbon exhaust emissions and lower NOx emissions. A high pressure pump driven by the cog belt from the camshaft supplies fuel at up to nearly 24,000 psi. The pump's electronic control system responds to fuel demand and delivers the optimal fuel pressure, injection timing and injection duration.

Injectors on the 2.8-liter diesel have been improved so that fuel burns more thoroughly, producing fewer particulates and lower emissions than previous generation diesel engines.

An electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger improves control of boost pressure, reducing emissions and improving full load engine power and torque. The turbocharger features moveable vanes that allow it to act like a small turbocharger under launch conditions. At higher engine speeds it acts like a larger turbocharger. The benefit to customers is enhanced low-end and high-end torque. Meanwhile, a vacuum reservoir improves cold launch performance by allowing the turbo to spool up faster from idle, which minimizes turbo lag.

The Liberty diesel engine uses two pilot injections prior to the main injection. This system prepares the cylinders for the main injection of fuel, which helps to smooth out the main combustion and quiet the engine, especially at idle.

In another improvement, the 2.8-liter diesel uses electronically controlled ceramic "smart" glow plugs with a warm-up time of only two seconds. They assist with low ambient temperature start conditions and only glow when needed. This is an advance over older, timer-operated glow plugs that require up to 10 seconds of warm-up prior to engine start.

SIX-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION
The 2005 Jeep Liberty features the NSG370 six-speed manual transmission, replacing two, five-speed manual transmissions previously used - the NV1500 and NV3550. This new transmission is a member of the six-speed NSG370 family, similar to the one used in the Chrysler Crossfire, the first six-speed for the Chrysler brand. The NSG six-speed manual transmission provides a 4.46:1 first-gear ratio, versus the 3.85:1 and 4.04:1 ratios of the five-speed transmissions it replaces, for improved launch and traction. It also provides close-ratio gear performance in the intermediate gears.

The NSG370 six-speed manual transmission provides optimal shift quality, improved quietness and high quality. A new dual-ratio transmission shift-tower system allows packaging of the six-speed shift pattern within the existing Jeep vehicles, and is tuned for optimized shift quality. For smooth operation the first and second gears have triple-cone synchronization, the third and fourth gears feature double-cone and the fifth and sixth gears single-cone synchronization. Hard-finished gears allow for quiet operation. A multi-rail, steel-construction shift system delivers high strength and precision. The two-piece aluminum case with integrated clutch housing assures powertrain stiffness and light weight. The new first-gear ratios combined with six-speed step spread allow optimization of axle ratios for fuel economy and performance.

The Jeep version of the NSG370 transmission has passed the rugged durability testing required of all Jeep driveline components.

2005 Jeep Liberty Communication and Entertainment Systems

The RB1 factory-installed Navigation Radio system is housed in the center of the Jeep Liberty dashboard, which allows for easy access for both the driver and passenger. The 4.2-inch full-color display features AM/FM stereo, CD player and navigation system in one unit. Utilizing voice commands, the system guides the user through the drive route, mile-by-mile, turn-by-turn until the final destination is reached. Destinations can be entered into the system eight different ways and the screen can be viewed as a detailed map or enlarged to be viewed turn-by-turn. When coupled with SIRIUS™ Satellite Radio, the stream listing, stream category, song title and artist can be viewed on the system’s display screen.

The RB1 Navigation Radio was offered as a Mopar® dealer-installed option on 2004 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. The first factory-installed option was available on the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2005 Chrysler 300. Factory-installation cost varies from $1,200 to $1,500, based on equipment package and content. Pricing for the dealer-installed version of the RB1 Navigation Radio is $1,595 (suggested retail price) plus labor.

Chrysler Group selected Alpine Electronics, a supplier of high-performance mobile electronics systems, to provide the navigation unit, GPS antenna and map database information. The map database information is housed on a single DVD-ROM based on NAVTECH data.

UCONNECT HANDS-FREE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
The UConnect hands-free communication system uses Bluetooth® technology to provide wireless communication between a customer’s compatible cellular telephone and the vehicle’s on-board receiver. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless networking technology that connects two or more devices together. As the number of drivers using cell phones increases, hands-free, voice-activated options are a way to connect a driver to a cell phone call more safely. The Chrysler Group was the first North American automaker to offer its customers a Bluetooth-enabled automotive dealer-installed application last year.

The factory-installed version allows the audio to be heard through the vehicle’s radio speakers. A control pad and microphone are housed in the vehicle’s rear view mirror serving as the driver interface. UConnect factory installation is $275 and available on the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as many other 2005 Chrysler Group products.

SIRIUS offers 60 music streams of commercial-free music along with 40 sports, news and entertainment streams, 24 hours a day.Consumers selecting the SIRIUS Satellite Radio option will receive a small, mouse-sized antenna mounted to the roof of the vehicle. They will be able to scan channels and select pre-set buttons for favorite channels. Consumers will also be able to search both by music category and channel, which will be displayed on the radio screen.

The Chrysler Group offers SIRIUS Satellite Radio as both a dealer- and factory-installed feature. 2005 Jeep Liberty Noise, Vibration and Harshness Improvements

Auburn Hills, MI - To reduce the NVH levels of the Liberty diesel, Jeep engineers made dozens of improvements affecting the engine and body-in-white. All of these improvements can be classified in one of three types: the source of the NVH, the structure of the vehicle and acoustics.
Source - Since the engine is the primary source of undesirable NVH levels, improvements to the 2.8-liter turbo diesel include engine balance shafts, a new noise-reducing engine cover, and a torque converter turbine damper. Also, an air induction resonator reduces induction noise emissions.

Structure - The structure of the Liberty was also reengineered. Improved engine mounts, called hydro mounts, function in a manner similar to shock absorbers. The fluid within the mounts provides isolation and damping, which reduces the amount of vibration and harshness that reaches the body. In another application, the dash, plenum and the body-in-white panel consist of a dampening material sandwiched between two metal layers. This process of stiffening and dampening the sheet metal reduces the amount of noise that travels into the vehicle.

Acoustics - Airborne noise is kept from the passenger compartment of the Liberty diesel in a number of ways. For example, an acoustic belly pan is attached beneath the engine to absorb its noise. Noise is also absorbed via an engine compartment hood liner. And the cabin contains noise-absorbing carpet.

A new body color grille with a full Jeep shield includes provisions for optional fog lamps on the new Jeep Liberty Sport. The higher fog lamp and park/turn lamp locations on the vehicle offer more protection from road debris. The new front fascia remains molded-in color with a crisper, more horizontal shape to provide the Liberty Sport with a wider, more stable appearance. Jeep Announces Liberty CRD Pricing
Boston, MA - In a speech today during press days at the New England International Auto Show, Jeff Bell, Vice President - Jeep, announced pricing for the 2005 Jeep® Liberty Common Rail Diesel (CRD), the first diesel-powered mid-size sport-utility vehicle in the U.S. The new 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine delivers the torque of a V-8, the performance of a V-6 and the fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine.

The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Jeep Liberty CRD Sport 4x4 is $25,125, including $610 destination. The base MSRP for the Jeep Liberty CRD Limited 4x4 is $27,355, including $610 destination. The Jeep Liberty CRD will begin arriving in dealerships later this year.

"Response to the new Jeep Liberty CRD has been huge," said Bell. "Nearly 40,000 consumers have expressed interest in the diesel-powered Jeep Liberty, well ahead of the manufacturing launch in November. The Liberty diesel is a technologically advanced powerplant designed to be an efficient, smooth, clean-running engine that produces lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions without sacrificing performance. The engine produces 160 horsepower and gets an estimated fuel economy of 22 miles city and 27 miles highway. The 2.8-liter diesel gives the Liberty best-in-class numbers in three categories: 295 lb-ft of torque @ 1,800 rpm; driving range of approximately 500 miles, and towing capacity of 5,000 lbs.

my uncle just bought a liberty in 10 days the tranny went, it was gasoline though.

I guess it happens I know my 4runner is running fine.

It will be real hard for me to buy a american suv again
