2005 Sport V8 Towing Capacity

If I understand the math correctly, my set up is probably at the high end of the range for acceptable weight.
Trailer is 26ft, 4900 lbs dry, say 5500 lbs loaded
Toyota max vehicle + trailer load is 12000 lbs per the manual, page 314
T4R curb weight is 4224 lbs, maximum GVR of 6005 lbs
add 700 lbs for people, gas. cargo and hitch
tongue weight at 15% = 825
so, gross combined vehicle weight is about 10,400, or 85% of the maximum

Do I understand this correctly?

thats a pretty big trailer.
the length is going to be an issue id think.

the 4runner has a pretty short wheelbase.

Yep, you have the math right. Limit on towing is 7000 lbs iirc but you do need to do the math like you did to get the GVWR right.

I think you'll be ok, but a couple of things to things about -- You'll need to have good brakes on the trailer and a good controller in the cab. Also, a weight-distributing hitch with the right torsion bars will help a LOT when it comes to control in crosswinds or as trucks go by.

Thanks for your help on this. I have the WD hitch and the sway control equipment, and the trailer has brakes and the T4R has a new electric brake control unit installed. I will travel like a snail for a while I'm sure, until I get comfortable with it

Yep. Just give yourself lots of room to stop.

Also take your time adjusting the brake controller making sure you take advantage of the trailer brakes w/o them doing too much of the braking.

You are pushing the T4R hard with that load. Too far towards the end of its capacity in my opinion. I had hopes of towing my camper with the T4R in the future but Toyota has stopped putting the V8 in the 4Runner......

I'm saying this because I have a 23' HTT (Dry weight 4600, loaded just under 6000, tongue weight @ 700#).

I tow this trailer with my 2012 Tundra CM Limited/5.7/4WD/Towing Package/Tekonsha P3/Reese WD Hitch with dual cam sway control.

The Tundra does a good job, but I would not want to try towing this trailer with anything smaller on a regular basis. I have my foot in it on moderate/hard climbs. Also, when a big rig goes by you can feel the trailer try and induce sway, even with a truck as big as the Tundra (hitch does a nice job handling that).

A truck as small as the T4R towing a trailer as long as yours, running the smaller 4.7, combined with its lighter weight & smaller size means you will be pounding the truck to travel on the highway.

I am just trying to help you with my experience seeing as my trailer is of a similar weight as yours.

Be safe, you will likely be white-knuckling a bunch on that first pull......

Well, I know that my V8 4WD can tow one 3rd gen 4Runner and one second gen 4 runner at the same time out of deep snow.
