2005 SR5 - VSC, engine, and trac control lights on

Hey everyone,

I have a 2005 SR5 that developed a recent problem. My engine, VSC, and Traction control lights are coming on and staying on. I tightened the gas cap but that didn't do anything. I then unhooked the battery and it cleared the lights for a couple of weeks but then their back!

Only thing recently is that I got 4 new tires (same size) and an alignment. Mechanic said timing valve cover is leaking oil (is there a tsb for this?) and to keep an eye on it.

Any ideas why these lights keep coming back on?

That was my next step but figured I'd ask here first.

Another thing. when I accelerate hard I can smell fuel or oil burning. My MPG has gone from 16/19 to 12/15 even driving conservatively but I attributed this to the new tires. Is it possible it could be a bad O2 sensor?

Not sure about the CEL, the other lights may indicate a need for zero point calibration, they all come on when that needs to be done.

CEL Track off new spark plugs/coils any suggestions appreciated

Having a similar problem. CEL VSC light came on and idling rough. I took it in and it needed new spark plugs and coils. $345 runs fine for a day starts idling rough again. CEL VSC on again. Running really rough and vibrating over 35 mph. Take it back to shop and supposedly 1 of the newly replaced spark plugs had a crack in the porcelain. Replaced Spark Plug no charge CEL VSC off. I immediately took to smog station (needed registration and cant pass smog with CEL on) I PASSED smog. idling great smooth for 2 days effin CEL VSC on again uggh not a rough idle (yet).

Any advice/suggestions before i take it back to orig shop for the 3rd time.

Not sure about the CEL but I'd toss a new brake light switch in. Fixed it for me as fas as the VSC/TRAC stuff

I have an 05 SR5 and the same thing has happened to me twice recently. On the web I found that it likely had to deal with how secure my gas cap was . . . it was still screwing in but it was the original part.

I went to O'Reilly's and bought a new gas cap and screwed it on. Immediately all of the lights went off.

About a month ago my wife decided to put gas in it and did not completely screw the cap on. The lights came on. I tried to screw it in, take it out, screw it back it, but that didn't work. Only after I put more gas in and screwed it back in did the lights come off. They haven't been back on since.

This is a $13 fix that you might try first. Hope that helps!

I still might take it to Auto Zone to have it read but the Auto Zone around here is 45 minutes away with traffic. O'Reilley is a 5 minute drive.

O'Reilly's read it as well and told me there were no odd readings . . . that's when I assumed it was the gas cap thing.

Alright y'all. I'm posting a pic of the OBD II code read out (P0456). It's a small evaporative system leak. I bought an aftermarket gas cap as mine was loose and figured this may be a solution. I've driven approximately 5 miles and the lights are still on.

Any ideas? Should I drive longer, get a OEM gas cap, or could be be something else? Thanks!

As mentioned by [MENTION=88858]madeinhb[/MENTION] drive it some more, a few days IMHO, that system has to sit at least overnight to evaluate the system, the system test works overnight or several hours after shutting down to determine if the system has a leak or slow leak.

Just an update. It's been over a week and I've put 75 miles on the truck without the lights clearing. I'm going to buy an OEM gas cap and see if that fixes the problem. Other than that, I'll have to see if other measures are warranted.

So after a week and a half and 100 miles the lights finally turned off! I recently filled my tank again and ensured I tightened the cap 5 clicks this time. Apparently that did the trick! Will post if I have any other trouble but the aftermarket gas cap works for now.
