2005 Sulfur Smell, anyone else?

Most ALL 4Runners have this problem, all models/years. There are one or two owners claiming that their Runner doesn't have this problem, but I would bet it's every single 4Runner. Until everyone gets together and starts making noise NOTHING will be done.

OK Guys,

I have to admit that I have never smelled the 'rotten egg' or 'sulfur' smell around my 4R.

Just exactly what conditions have to be right for this to happen?

Is there a certain speed, engine load, window position etc?

I run el cheapo, regular Costco gas.
 
Just filling it up and driving it. I mostly smell it when the back window is down. I also smelled it when I had all the windows up and just had the vent on...It really stinks!

But Koz, we brought this topic up earlier and then all of a sudden, all the Nay Sayers jumped in with all this advise which alone, left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

I think unless the 05 runners go in to the dealership for Bad Smell, then Toyota will have no idea that there is a problem.

Now, I often thought about having a Register that we could advertise on Edmunds, T4R.ORG, and other yota sites. I would think that if we got enough names, and address, then we could email this to toyota corporate (if there were say multiple THOUSANDS of database entries), other than that...

What do you do.

Think about what the drivers behind us must be thinking or feeling as their air conditioners pull in our exhaust right into their cabin.
 
Just wanted to chime in. I'm trying to get a 4Runner (just need to find an honest salesperson... :rolleye2: ). But I can tell you that I had noticed this smell back in '98 with my Nissan Pathfiner. It wasn't a choking odor, but very noticeable. So it isn't Toyota specific.
 
While I agree with you... its definitely not toyota specific, nor is it SUV/CAR specific. However, toyota does have V8s that do not stink it up like the 4runner.

Good luck with your purchase. The biggest advice I can give you (which I'm sure you already know), is to utilize email for quotations, familiarize yourself with edmunds, kbb, and CARSDIRECT.COM.

Have you chosen your specific model?
 
Thanks. I've been trying to get as many qoutes via email as possible. However I think they've caught on to this tactic. Many request that I come in to their showroom.

Utilized Edmunds and KBB. It's amazing the defense these guys throw up against KBB. I swear they have a standardized response downplaying its validity.

Looking for a 4WD, V8. Preferably a Sports Package.
 
2005 V8 4wd sulfur smell

Hey all,
Just loggin' in here as well.
Just imported a 4runner from US into Canada.
V8 VVTi sport, lotsa sulfur smell with rear window open at 70+ MPH
Tried gas in Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wa, and BC, all have it.
Have about 3000 miles on it so far.
Anybody know of any TSB's yet??

ALSO: ANY OUTSTANDING TSB's FOR 2005's THAT ANYONE CAN POINT ME TO??

also, also: looking for a service manual for 2005 sport edition V8, 4wd, either hardcopy or CD (and don't want to shell out 200 clams). Any pointers?
