2005 Sulfur TSB done

Well I just got my truck back last night after the 20,000 mile service and the Sulfur TSB. I had my wife drive it in front of me on the way home and really give it some gas to I could tell if the smell is gone.



Well, it's gone, so far completely! When she really got on it I could smell almost a burning rubber smell but I figured it was just due to the new Cat that was installed. I didn't even get a little wiff of sulfur, none at all. I know from previously driving behind her sometimes I'd get hit so hard from the smell it would about knock me out. So far so good though, looks like Toyota may have got it right for the 05 V6's!

How did "Toyota may have got it right for the 05 V6's" if you just got the sulfur tsb done to it.

I had the TSB done also and I do smell a little once in a blue moon but after the truck reaches operating temperature no smell at all. This TSB worked and those cats were bad. I havent smelled it when getting out of the truck since they did the work and before after I shut the truck off and got out it was all around and even when returning to the vehicle after an hour or 2 the interior still smelled from it. I am finally very pleased with the vehicle. That was the worst smell to have and with a cloth interior it just soaks up the odor. The only thing I do notice about the gas mileage since ,per the computer ,is 1.5 MPG less since the repair.

That's really good to hear. I always used to smell it when I got out of the truck, and I freaking hated that. I guess I'll really know for sure if the smell is gone after about a month or so. But like I said, so far so good.
 
TSB done last week and zero smell 2005 V8. Steering wheel Vibration problem looked at , they rotated tires. Problem is still there and Dunlops are still there too.
 
Vibration&smell

Smell is 80 percent less even under heavy acceleration. Still have residue once in a while that gets into the cab and is around the truck. For the most part it may be tolerable finally with the fix. As for the vibration. They had to balance 3 out of the 4 wheels with the bridegstones and then 4 wheel alignment(they said it was pulling} and then rotated tires. My vibration is minimal now, also finally. Heard people stating the tires were doing it but now your Dunlops? I am finally enjoying the truck minus the rattles/ticking against the front bottom of the windshield noise I hear when its cold. It runs GREAT though!! And rides sweet for a big truck. Toyota made it more plush after all these years.

I thought the TSB only covered the V6's ..... is there one for the V8 now that I missed?

I thought that V8 owners have posted they had the TSB done but I'm not sure. You will have to ask this question again to other V8 owners.

Funny --- I was just in my Toyota dealership a week ago and he told me there was no TSB dealing with the sulfur smell and there was nothing that could be done about it. He also told me the best fix was to drive with my windows up (... which prompted me to give him an evil look.)
 
Ok --- just called my local dealer to get this done. He told me that he needed me to drop off the vehicle for a day before he can even order the parts ... and then I have to drop it off for another day or two at a later date so they can install the parts (and .. of course ... no loaner vehicle during either of these dropoffs). He said the first visit in necessary because they have to check that I have the sulfur smell ... and then make special calls to Toyota to get the part. I asked him if I could just let him stand behind the vehicle while I hit the gas .... and apparently that isn't good enough to verify the smell.

Did anyone else have an experience such as this ? (multiple dropoffs to get a simple TSB done?)
 
Dropped off on Friday got ot back on Saturday. Loaner provided and oil change was complimentary. Cherry Hill Toyota has done great by me. Now if I can just get the vibration deal solved. Invoice refers to TSB #EGO44-05

Check your owner manual. I believe that you are entitled to a warranty work loaner if they keep the car overnight.

The TSB reduces the smell but doesnt get rid of it completely I am finding. Today with the snow here is NJ and the humidy just right under heavy acceleration I got out and smelled it all around the truck. The issue is better then before but not a complete fix as I previously thought. The question is can you deal with it? The truck is a fine piece of machinery but I guess the tradeoff for 245 horse and the emissions needing to meet California ( for what reason in NJ I dont know) also using the low sulfur gas in NJ(another I dont know why) this might be something that will never go away.
 
You guys are lucky. I called my dealer about it on my 04 V6 and even mentioned the TSB and he said no way. He then told me it was the gas I put in my car.

Suggestion...don't just call. Go in person and talk to them.

Other options:
- Go to a different dealer
- Call Toyota
- Tell the dealer that you will file a complaint with the BBB if they don't at least try to address the problem
- Bring in proof that you've tried various brands of gasoline
