2005 wheel size, 16" or 17"?

I'm planning on purchasing a 2005 SR5 V6 4Runner real soon. I noticed for an extra $100 or so I can upgrade to P265/65R17 tires on 17" rims instead of the standard P265/70R16 tires on 16" rims. Think the upgrade is worth it? I heard the 17" rims may not be as smooth a ride as the 16, but the 17" may be better for off road. Any advice appreciated!

If it's only $100, go for it. I think the 4Runner looks better with the 17" anyways.

I had the 16" rims when I bought my truck, but I found a set of the 17" rims afterwards. I can tell you that the 17" rims do not ride any worse than the 16" but that could be due to tire brand. My 16's were Bridgestones and my 17's are Michelins.

As far as off-road, I have no experience with them, I knew when I bought my truck that the most "off-roading" I would be doing was on light trails, so no 4WD for me. I know some people prefer the 16" rims for off-roading because of a larger tire selection.

Also, even though the option is "available" doesn't mean you can get it. I wanted the 17" wheels when I bought my truck, but Toyota didn't think it was a popular option in my area, so no 4Runner with that option could be found locally. Depending on where you live, you may or may not be able to upgrade to the 17" wheels or find one with 16" wheels.

Personally, I think it is well worth the money. The 17'' rims look much better on the 4Runner. You would be getting the same rims as on the Limited's. In the NY/NJ/PA area, you cannot get an SR5 without the 17'' Limited rims. I have never seen a 4th generation 4Runner with the 16'' rims.

keep the 16" wheels and then sell them to me. pickup any 16" aftermarket wheel and tires Way better than what the stock offers and it'll look cool right off the bat! plus the stock wheels are 16x7 and if you plan to offroad, get some 16x8 wheels so you can fit 285's w/o any issues (you can technically fit 285's on 16x7 but if you're getting some new meat, might as well get some new wheels too).

btw, w/ 16" wheels you have a better selection and cheaper wheels than 17".

I would check which tires they are proposing to put in the 16 and 17 rims - it could be they are offering a better tire on the 16 inch rim hence the small difference in price - if you can find any way to avoid having the stock dunflops I would recommend you do. The quality tires will probably have a bigger bearing on handling, ride and noise than the rims at this size.

Mt 2004 SR5 Canadian model came standard with 16's. I have an option package that included the light control system, etc. including 17's. I like the appearance of the rims. With an SR5, I could and did buy 16" steel rims for my dedicated winter tires. (Sport models have larger brake calipers and cannot use 16's).

Should you ever need winter tires, 16's are easier to find than 17's.

Caliper &brake disc size on '05's

I have been watching all of the changes of the 4th gen now since '03 and am about ready to jump for an'05 but I BADLY would like to find a way to get 16" wheels on a Sport Ed. I realize this is probably not possible but as an alternative I might do something crazy like get a Limited (XREAS) and swap hoods or buy a Sport hood. Does anyone know if Toyota is changing the discs and calipers on the 05 Limiteds or SR5's to the larger size? Seems like I had read that on a thread here recently.

if you want 16" that badly, you can swap out the entire disc assembly w/ a sr5. that's the only way as the sr5's have smaller discs compared to the sport/limited models.
