2005 with sulfur smell

I have 2005 V6 Sport, recently with the weather being nice I have had the back window down. To my surprise, on several occasions I would like to add, I have smelled sulfur. I thought Toyota fixed this problem and I would not have the problem on a 05?
Any other 05's owners noticed the sulfur smell?

Yup, the 2005 should have the new CATs along with the different ECU programming. I had the correction done on my 2004 and while its not completely gone, it is 90% better. I do find that running premium gas actually doesn't smell as bad.

nope, i was driving yersterday with the window down and nothing. i also had the sunroof open so maybe any exhaust was kept out.

Open the rear window and head for a highway. When getting on the highway put the pedel to the metal and you will get the smell.

Jokingly I asked my GF if she crapt her pants when I first smelled the sulfur and well, lets just say, I didn't enjoy the evening as well as I thought I was going to.

I have this lovely smell and well I don't like it, nor do I appreciate the fact that there has not been a 100% resolution to this problem. AS IF TOYOTA is not aware of this issue even with 2005.

Is it worth us coming to a conclusion as to which gas company and octane reduces the sulfer smell

I have noticed this smell on my 04, and my 05. I have also noticed that it doesnt matter whether or not the rear window is down or not. All you have to do is punch the throttle enough on the highway.

Gotta love that smell....I feel even worse for the person behind me...haha. I have an '03 and had the sulfur TSB done, the smell is still there but ALOT less than before. Its just something you have to grow to live with...it wakes me up each time i get a wiff of it

I am shocked this is common for 05's. Pay $30k for a vehicle that stinks everyone out, it is an embarrassing expensive transporting stink bomb. haha Before this I had no complaints, I am so embarrassed I won't even admit this complaint. I know someone will probably say oh better the stink than transmission problems or some other major problem.
I don't care it is still embarrassing.

Oh well. Gotta live with it I am already hooked to the ride (personally and financially)

Got a 2005 v6 (2000mi) and I got it too. I smell it with windows closed and then stop and open door. Its not always there but sometimes. I just live with it at this point cause its not that bad yet. Interesting to hear everyboby's got same bitch.

Have the "odor" as well, on an '05 V6.

I think it's important to remember that this is not limited to Toyota, or to 4Runners in particular. I've heard similar complaints from folks who own various brands of late-model cars...

Yup, I get a good wiff if I have the back window down and gun it. I asked Toyota about it and they verified that the Cat fix is done before the '05 can be sold, supposed to be done at the factory. Something we just have to live with if we wanna drive a 4Runner .

I just got mine 2 weeks ago and I smell the sulfur also. Might cut the resonator get a Mag tip and angle it to the side.

Newer vehicles may not have the "sulfur mod"

If I understand the situation correctly, the sulfur mod TSB is not automatically implemented in newer 4Runners. Rather, it's something they will do on an as-needed (as-demanded?) basis. They change out the cats (probably to ones with more nickel in them) and reprogram the ECU. There are reasons (for Toyota, at least) to avoid doing this mod to every new 4Runner. I've heard that they're trying to reduce or eliminate nickel in cats, and that the ECU mod may have a small negative impact on gas mileage, since it *may* cause the engine to run very lean less often. It's apparently lean operation that deposits sulfur compounds inside the cats, and rich running (when you're pressing down farther on the accelerator) that burns it off to produce the smell.

For those who suffer from the smell and don't have the rear window down, try turning recirculate off (fresh air on) and keeping the HVAC fan on low at least. There is reason to believe the reason you smell the sulfur is that it's coming in backwards from the cabin air exhausts at the bottom rear of the vehicle.

Has anybody had the smell when the air selector is on fresh and the fan is on and the windows are up?

When I got my 2004 done, the service manager said that all new 2005 would come with the new CATs and ECU programming from the factory. You can give that as much credibility as you feel comfortable...

Soooo, if it's a TSB now, can I just drive into my local Toy delearship and complain about the smell and ask them to fix it 100% under warranty coverage? I figured that I'd ask here before calling them.

FYI: I only smell it when the rear window is down... but it's AWFUL. That's one of the reasons I liked the 4R so much - no, not the fact that the cabin air smells like a carefully executed fart, but the ability to have the rear window down while driving.

I don't think you understand. On the 2005, the fixes have already been implemented. I guess if a bunch of 2005 owners complain at once, they'll need to provide another fix.

You're right, I didn't understand... I didn't understand that the fix was, in fact, done for '05.... yet my '05 smells like a heep of shit!

Soooo, what can we flatulent four runner owners do to solve this problem? (I don't like to complain. I like to get things done). Do I (we) just go to the dealer and demand that it be fixed? Call Toyota? Just curious....
