2006 4runner pinion noise

My 4runner has a whirling noise in the nback end and two separate shops target the pinion bearing. One says he can rebuild with new bearings and the other suggested to get a salvageed back end and swap it. Anyone with experience and what costs have you run up against. Truck has 200k miles and never used for towing. 90% highway driving. Thanks.

That'd be my suggestion. Check your VIN code so you know your gear ratio, then start calling around wrecking yards and see what you can get.

If you've got basic tools, you can swap the rear third yourself in a couple hours. It's not a hard job at all.
