2006 Explorer gets better V8

Up untill 3 years ago when I replaced my Explorer for a Highlander I have owned a Ford (2 cars and 2 trucks) for over 25 years. They make good products for the money except for the tranny. In almost every Ford car and truck I have owned the tranny was always the weak link especially in their trucks. After a complete rebuilt of the tranny by the dealer in the explorer after only 46,000 miles, I gave up when 6,000 miles latter overdive would not engage. Maybe this new 6 speed will changed that but a doubt it. For now I will stick with Toyota.

Yes, but Trail Life magazine stacked up the 4.7L in a Tundra, against a Chevy, Ford & Nissan 1/2 ton. The Tundra did quiet well in their head-to-head trailer pulling tests, even though it was the smallest displacement. It was actually better than the Ford's F-150 with the 5.3 (?). Of course, the big Titan motor bested them all by a margin.iFORCE said:

Some people buy Fords and GMC trucks is because its American, not from the Japanese.

Not for nothing, but I don't think anyone here could give two shits about the Explorer, even if it has 300hp. Horsepower (in this case) is not everything. There's going to be a Trailblazer SS with the the 6.0, and I still would not be interested.

Are the American Car Manufacturers smarter than we think or give them credit for???
What if GM, Ford and Dodge are really genious marketers in disguise?
What if they (GM/Ford/Dodge) are secretly putting out a such vehicles that they are designing them to give some utility for some of their cars and a larger percentage are designed to fail at different intervals. Guaranteeing service charges for those "Just out of warranty vehicles". I mean, I worked for a warranty company and there are so many damn loopholes in current and extended car warranty it would make your head spin. Not everything is covered.
Just something to ponder on.

Polishing a turd.
The Exploder was the the king of SUV becuase it was reasonbly priced and no one else made them back in the 1990s. Mid sized and garage friendly when the only other SUVs were full size Broncos and Jimmy/Blazer/Tahoes.
It still sells hundreds of thousands each year becuae it is reasonably priced and aimed at the Mall Mom who is not too sophisticated or demanding about quality or engineering or logngevity or reliability, or durability, etc. My boss' Exploder is only about 8 months old and less than 10,000 miles and it already has a grinding noise out of the rear diff! Of course he paid abotu $23,000 for his V6, but still, grinding noises already? But he is not a car guy and could care less......we keep telling him that it will go away whne the parts finally grind into each other...:bash:
All Big 3 talk about is more power, more torque. But they never talk about quality. Reliability. Not having to go to the dealer 5 times in the first 6 months lilke I did with my Tahoe to get "debugged"...I mean, this was expected. a normal part of woning a Ford or Chevy or Dodge, goin in to get debugged unti lit works.....what a strange feeling to only go back to the dealer with my Runner for oil changes and not to complain about the latest thing that does not work......

Few of us have owned enough of any car brand to make statistically valid generalizations. I haven't either, but here is my SUV/van experience.
Two "Toyota" models:
1. 1999 RX300 - had to go back many times for "debugging", but the dealer kept trying, apparently with factory help, and things eventually got fixed.
2. 2004 4wd V8 4Runner - one problem (the famous drivetrain vibration), many visits, and Toyota eventually decided to refuse to fix it.
Many Suburbans:
Most of them have been good. My 2004 has had one problem in 35000 miles, which was quickly and correctly repaired in one try. So far it has been a more satifactory purchase than the 4Runner, though it's not nearly as fun to drive. Incredibly, its highway gas mileage almost matches the 4Runner (and its computer is accurate, too.)
Two Fords:
1. 1990 Aerostar - a disaster!
2. 1992 4wd Explorer - still plugging away on rough ranch roads after 146,000 miles.

1993 4wd Grand Cherokee - not great, but not too bad. A/C, Power steering, & transfer case repair. Sold at 122, 000 miles.
