I have been trying to get a definite answer to this question for the last 2 months. From what I can tell --- the answer is yes. Not only should the HU be compatible, but you should also be able to install the accessory wire without problem. I am still waiting on the parts department at my local dealer to give me a call back to let me know whether or not they can order me an 06 HU. If I can get my hands on one, I will let you know.

Have any of you used XM? I have on different vehicles and can say though it is nice, it doesn't compare in any way (fidelity) to cds. I've had aftermarket and factory installed equipment. I'm not trying to discourage "trying" it, just saying if you haven't heard it side-to-side, then going through all the work to upgrade your jbl system to it seems to me like a bit of a waste. Again, this is all imo! 
Now if the power/fidelity of the 06 is more like the Scion units and I can switch out my JBL with it, believe me, I'll be on the same boat as you!

I am personally not upgrading for the satelite capabilities --- because I personally think paying for radio is the craziest thing I have ever heard of. And --- neither satelite or normal radio even plays the type of music I listen to anyways. I just want the MP3 and accessory jack capabilities.

I think the output is pretty much the same. The only thing changed is the addition of the MP3 and bluetooth (in the NAV modules) ... and the accessory wire. Also -- they got rid of the tapedeck if I am not mistaken.
I would really like to get an 06 NAV unit put into mine ... since the bluetooth would be really nice to have.

If Toyota is still using the same Nav program that they did in '05, I'd be very very hard pressed to upgrade. I just came from using the one in my Dad's 05 Tundra and it simply doesn't compare in any way, other than being built in, to the new stand-alone gps units out there. It doesn't even tell you when you missed a turn, it just reroutes you. For those of you who have it built in, I expect to get flamed for saying this. And I'll cut you off--yes it is nice to have it intergrated, but Toyota really needs to update their program. It is like a French made program or something!

To go one step further, would a 2006 navigation unit with bluetooth and voice recognition work in an 2005 4Runner? The navigation units looks to be the same shape so that wouldn't be a problem. I just don't know if there would be extra wiring for the bluetooth.
