2006 Jeep Commander

Call me crazy, but i do dig the Commander. It's a relatively good buy if you can get tons of discounts on it, which you probably can with the low sales figures.

I'm calling you crazy!!!!!! :p

What's next? Full disclosure of every option you can get on a Chrysler Pacifica? :D

hehe,I know,it just seems like overkill on just a couple of brands instead of more of a variety instead of just Jeeps and several Mercedes which I'm sure are out of the price range for most of the people on this board.

I guess my beef with the Commander is "what's the point"? Do we need another oversize SUV that has poor MPG rating, usless 3rd row seating and handles about as good as an H2 and won't venture very far off road if one is even given the opportunity. I seen three road tests on 'em and I've driven one and nothing about it impressed me.

Jeep's Compass is a POS too.

Ron,

This subforum is for all brands, not just Jeeps and Mercedes. However, these two brands, along with Toyota & Nissan, make the most SUVs (excluding small car-based SUVs). Therefore, you will hear more about them than other brands. But, if you look at the different pages of this subforum, then you will see that most (if not all) brands are represented.

I post reviews/data as i get them from the net...as you may know, i don't favor one brand over another.

The Commander is no different than a Land Rover LR3, Toyota Sequoia, Nissan Armada, Ford Expedition, etc..

I do agree about the Compass...what the hell was Jeep thinking?!!

Pacifica?? Nah, how about Mercedes R500?? That's my dream soccermom mobile!:D

Mercedes are for a different class (not middle) and have little in common with our 4Runners or most of the trucks discussed costing half the price of a Mercedes.

Yes,one or two Mercedes are very capable off road but I've done a lot of 4 wheelin' and I've yet to have one join us and they aren't mentioned in comparisons or "shop talk" with other truck buddies. The Mercedes is the odd man out due to it's cost and target buyers which I'm sure 99% of us aren't.

Kinda like discussing Caviar on a forum dedicated to fast food. :D

Maybe...but, a 4runner owner may one day decide to shell out money to get it......someone like me...so, i am that 1% of people who would have found this subforum rather useful.:)

The fact that you have not found a G500 off-road does not mean that it does not exist nor is it not capable.

This subforum is NOT meant to be cost-concious nor is it brand-specific. This is for COMPARISONS of 4runner vs. others on the market and REVIEWS of 4runners and other SUVs on the market.

I am not sure where we are going with this discussion. If you don't like it, then you don't have to enter this subforum.

Competitor's SUVs

Wow, that was a short-lived model!

As a matter of fact, I have only seen one on the road.

Like many others, I enjoy reading about other SUV models - in all market segments and price ranges.

Thai, thanks for taking the time to research and post!

No problem...it's for my knowledge too as a "Board Certified SUV Nut.":D

:iagree: it's still good info to know and it reminds me each time I look at the alternatives, I know I made a smart and great logical choice. Thanks Thai, it's also handy to know what's out there. I like the Jeep Wranglers which I didn't think much of prior to the sub-forum.

Also, I like the shot of the Cherokee next to the Commander... ahhh, the similarities.

Here is Edmunds Long-Term test on it:
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/d...=118605?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..2.*#2

Total Body Repair Costs: None
Total Routine Maintenance Costs (over 10 months): $417.37
Additional Maintenance Costs: None
Warranty Repairs: 5
Non-Warranty Repairs: None
Scheduled Dealer Visits: 3
Unscheduled Dealer Visits: 3
Days Out of Service: 2
Breakdowns Stranding Driver: 1

True Market Value at service end: $30,144
What it sold for: $37,885.20 (Insurance payoff)
Depreciation: $5,854.80 or 13.5% of original paid price
Final Odometer Reading: 26,070

Summing up
Although there were a couple of major bumps in the road, we weren't anxious for the test to end, especially so abruptly. But even after 26,000 miles and 10 months, most of us still weren't completely comfortable with the notion of a $40,000 Jeep, no matter how upscale the interior. To us, the Commander seems like a big Jeep, not a luxury Jeep. It tries hard to be a Land Rover, but the tough, down-and-dirty heritage that makes us love the Jeep brand might actually keep the Commander from fitting in with other SUVs in this price category.

Surprisingly, the Commander held it's value well...much better than my Mercedes!:( However, with the potential discontinuation of it's production, i think that it's value will decline...a lot...it ain't no Defender!:D

It's too bad that Edmunds did not give more details about the crash?? How fast?? Why did it crash?? What happened to stability control or brake assist?? I am worried because part of the engine went into the passenger compartment, resulting in a broken foot! If this was greater than 40 mph, then i can understand...but if this is under 40 mph, then this is a no-no!

They're also doing a good job of covering the pavement on dealer lots all over. Expect steep discounts over the next year so they might end up being a good buy.

If you look at the 43740 they paid for it, and the TMV of 30144, $13.6k depreciation, or 30.6%. Silly Edmunds. :D

Yeah, but insurance company gave them $37K.

Exactly...I would take this over a Land Rover LR3, Expedition/Navigator, Denali/Escalades, Sequoia, or Amarda/QX56......unless i needed a lot of room. It does have decent off-road capability (improved Quadra Drive, clean underbody). In fact, from my eyes, the underbody is cleaner than 4runner's...it is very similar to Toyota Land Cruiser when you look underneath. Of course, you do have to deal with the long wheelbase and Jeep's questionable reliability/durability.

Insurance payout data is not reflective of actual depreciation. Not everyone wrecks their vehicle when it comes time to replace it. I don't agree the Commander held it's value well based on the insurance pay out.

ALG gave the GL 4 stars, 3 for the Commander.

You're right, but why did the insurance company pay so much if the vehicle value was not even close??

From what I've seen, insurance companies are pretty generous when it comes to a totaled vehicle. I'm not sure how they get their numbers. For a popular vehicle, I've seen them provide 3 local dealer listings for a comparable vehicle (year, model, mileage), average the 3, add tax, tags, fees and get a total. But no one pays the dealer asking price.

Edmunds may have kept tax, title, and fees in the payout.

Don't recall from reading the article on how long they (Edmund's) had the Commander for. But there are two insurance companies, Allstate and 21st Century, that offer full value/settlement of the vehicle if it's total loss in the first year. Then again this just my theory and doesn't explain why they didn't get every penny.
