Preview: 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Mercedes brings a new family online in Alabama.
by Marty Padgett (2004-12-06)

Mercedes-Benz has released these first pictures of the new 2006 M-Class sport-ute, due to be shown at the Detroit auto show in January.

According to a release, the new M-Class sits 5.9 inches longer, 2.8 inches wider and 0.4 inches lower on the road than the first-generation vehicle, with a 114-inch wheelbase that's 3.7 inches longer than before. The new M-Class switches from a body-on-frame design to a unibody platform - more like the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Benz's new seven-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is full-time four-wheel drive. A height-adjustable AIRMATIC air suspension is option. A revised four-wheel traction control system now incorporates functions such as a downhill driving aid and Hill-Start Assist.

As expected, the new M-Class offers up two engines at launch. The ML350 is powered by an all-new 3.5-liter, four-valve-per-cylinder V-6 engine delivering 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The ML 500 sports the Benz 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 302 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque.

Major improvements to the M-Class' interior have been made, according to Mercedes, with richer materials, a more sporting instrument panel, and more interior room for all five passengers. The new M adds more than two inches of additional front leg room, and rear-passenger knee and leg room have also been increased by 1.4 inches and 1.3-inches. Front, side and side curtain airbags are standard.

The M-Class will be built at the Mercedes-Benz factory near Tuscaloosa, Ala. A seven-passenger version of the same architecture, possibly badged as the new G-Class, is expected in a year. The crossover R-Class, based on the same architecture, is also expected within the year.

January 30, 2003: Mercedes-Benz M-Class Twice as Strong in the Future (AutoBild)
The M-Class became an instant world success. Naturally the successor should repeat it.
Therefore it will appear twice.

the M-Class beats all records

self-supporting unibody chassis

further refined four wheel drive technology

world premiere of first seven speed automatic

Reasons for celebrating: These days (January 2003) the 500.000th M-Class comes off the line in Tuscaloosa. Although the car is no longer completely fresh after five years of production, economically the M beats all records. This Geländewagen is already profitable in its first product cycle.

The market niche of the M-Class will soon become a broadly fanned out segment, in which Mercedes-Benz wants to place no less than five new models, in the context of the re-orientation of the all wheel drive program:

ML/M-Class successor, version with normal wheel base

MLX/new M-Class with 205 mm (8 inch) extended wheel base

GST/Grand Sport Tourer, same wheel base as the new M-Class, the version with short wheel base

GST-X version with long wheel base

CST/Compact Sport Tourer on basis of the next A-class

In the distant future a further model to come off the line is a sporty crossover car, the MST, which is positioned between the CST and GST.

While the current M-Class had to cover the entire range from a comfort-oriented onroader to a more climbing-suited offroader, the second generation with the model designation W164 will move a good step further toward a Geländewagen.

This changed requirement profile helps not only in the fight against the pure onroaders which are specialized only for paved roads, but also against newcomers Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg which are "washed with all 4x4 waters". Original soundtrack from Stuttgart: "The GST offers optimal traction, however without consideration for hardcore criteria such as approach angles or wading depth. The new M-Class, however, can even get through where no snow plow cleared the road before to ease travel."

For technical production reasons the current M possesses a conventional ladder frame, torsion resistant like a drawbridge, but unfortunately much too heavy. With the W164 Mercedes dares the jump to a self-supporting unibody chassis with attached axle subframes. A similar solution was already invented by Jeep years ago for the Grand Cherokee. With the help of modules the offroad fitness can be extended in steps. In this way even a G-Class-successor (MLG) could be presented: with up to three differential locks, with disengageable stabilizer bars, with still more clearance and with radically cut overhangs.

Wheel travel and rear axle suspension articulation are to be increased using a new multi-link suspension with Airmatic DC pneumatics (more). The M-Class body can be pneumatically raised higher and lowered lower than comparable passenger car models.

The four wheel drive technology will be further improved with more electronics, however remains basically unchanged. The traction assistance 4ETS already prevents individual wheel slip by a combination of brake intervention and engine torque reduction. The longitudinal lock works progressively. Transverse locks are not presently planned. Low range can be engaged with the push of a button. The crawl gear does not only help on steep mountain passages, but also when driving downhill, where the vehicle is kept reliably on track by an additional function (like 4ETS+ Hill descent control), without the driver having to press a separate button.

The brake will get an extended function range with a solenoid operated parking brake with hill-holder and drive-off mechanism (Drive-Off Assist), the combined dry-braking stutter-brake interval switch, enhanced brake power in stop and go traffic (Traffic Jam Assist), the newly tuned brake assistant as well as a wheel load-steered dynamic braking force distribution, which supplies optimal retardation even in curves. In connection with the optional Distronic the brake is activated even without driver intervention.

Originally Mercedes Benz wanted to offer the new direct injection gas engines already with the introduction of the W164 series, but they are delayed. Why? Because the development of the turbo aggregates planned in each case in two performance levels is behind schedule and because on the important US market the fuel quality does not yet meet direct injection engine requirements (low sulfur super plus).

Therefore the W164 starts as ML 350 with 3.7 litres displacement and 245 hp. As second gas model the ML 500 with at first 292 hp rounds off the pallet. Here in the medium-term an increase in output to 326 hp is planned - or at once the new Biturbo DI engine with 340 hp. The ML 55 AMG also gets a successor, however not before 2005. A V8 suction engine with 6.3 litres displacement and nearly 400 hp will hum in the ML/X63 AMG.

The most successful diesel variant, the ML 270 CDI, as well as the bear-strong ML 400 CDI might be continued. A new V6 direct injection diesel with up to 215 hp is in development and will replace the inline five powerplant in the long term. Mercedes may also bring diesel MLs to North America, if the market demands it. (US diesel renaissance).

Nearly revolutionary is the first world-wide seven speed automatic transmission, which is to set new yardsticks in driveability, consumption and acceleration. It really looks as if the next M-Class production anniversary is already programmed.

I am trying to figure out what is so great about "self-supporting unibody chassis"? Doesn't the Honda Civic have a self-supporting unibody chassis? I mean all cars built with unibody chassis stand up all by themsleves right?

Also I think a seven speed automatic might be a bit of overkill. I would think the transmission would be so busy shifting that it may never get around to putting the power to the wheels.

ML 63 AMG with 462 hp (476 PS) and 600 Nm 6.3 liter V8 AMG (M156) 2006

That sounds pretty nice! Does that mean it might be faster than a Cayenne Turbo?

The styling is a little odd....but I think I might get used to it and think it looks OK. Maybe in other colors. I'm glad they changed the style a lot. I don't like it when a company "completely designs" a car and it look a lot like its predecessor.

Also note...the transmission shifter...it's on the steering wheel column...aka like BMW 7-series!! That's just a stupid idea...and looks ridiculous! I guess MB is copying BMW.

Larger Mercedes-Benz M-Class offered with diesel and gas engines

Detroit, Michigan - Dr. Eckhard Cordes, Member of Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG, unveiled the new M-Class to journalists from around the world today. "With this completely redeveloped premium SUV we add a new chapter to the success story of its predecessor," explained Cordes during his first press conference as Head of the Mercedes Car Group.

The new M-Class is available with three new engines, a standard seven-speed automatic transmission, a more effective four-wheel drive system, Airmatic air suspension and the anticipatory occupant protection system Pre-Safe.

The U.S.-built M-Class will go on sale in the US and Canada in the spring of next year and in Europe next summer.

The new M-Class is 150 mm longer (now 4780 mm), 71 mm wider (now 1911 mm) and 5 mm lower (now 1815 mm with roof rails) than its predecessor. The wheelbase has grown by 95 mm to 2915 mm.

Three of the four engines available for the 2005 model are new and outstrip the output and torque of the power units for the outgoing model by up to 38 per cent. New drive-system technology and impressive aerodynamics (the Cd value is down to 0.34 from the previous 0.40) combine to cut fuel consumption by as much as ten per cent.

190 horsepower and 224 horsepower V6 diesel engines with third-generation common-rail direct injection are new. The diesel models burn just 9.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres making the new M-Class one of the most economical off-roaders in its class. Another new arrival is the V6 gasoline engine powering the ML 350, with 272 horsepower. The engine range is headed by the eight-cylinder in the ML 500, which now has an output of 306 hp. Mercedes' unique seven-speed automatic transmission is standard in all variants of the new M-Class.

The new W164 M-Class Information

Some tidbits:

Ready for rough terrain: the off-road package with AIRMATIC

Mercedes-Benz has taken the permanent four-wheel drive and 4ETS traction systems to the next level by incorporating additional functions such as a Downhill Speed Regulation, Start-Off Assist and the off-road ABS system. The M-Class can be ordered with two different variants of the four-wheel drive system, allowing it to meet the varying requirements of off-road drivers: in addition to the basic version, a new off-road package is optionally available which enables the M-Class to master even the toughest routes across rough terrain. Its primary features include a two-speed transfer case with an off-road ratio, manually or automatically selectable differential locks (100 per cent) between the front and rear axle and on the rear axle, and a modified version of the AIRMATIC air suspension system tailored to off-road driving, which raises the ground clearance by 110 mm to as much as 291 millimetres and the vehicle’s fording depth to a maximum of 600 millimetres.

Off-road performance is now improved by a further development of the traction system 4ETS, which now features additional functions such as off-road ABS, Start-Off Assist and Downhill Speed Regulation as standard.

Off-road Pro technical package: this equipment package includes components with whose help the M-Class is able to master even the most difficult off-road stretches:

1 Two-speed transfer case with low-range ratio

2 Differential locks (100 per cent) at the transfer case and rear axle
pub284_3.jpg

3 AIRMATIC with extended functions for more ground clearance

4 Compass

Off-road styling package: This equipment package includes an under-ride guard of brushed stainless steel at the front and rear, as well as a sterling silver painted radiator grille with chrome trim strips.

PRE-SAFE® creates the link between active and passive safety. It is networked with Brake Assist and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and recognises critical handling situations which might lead to an accident. PRE-SAFE® intervenes in such dangerous situations within milliseconds, preparing both the occupants and the vehicle for the possible collision:

1 The seat belts of the driver and front passenger are tensioned as a precaution.

2 If the electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory function (optional) is in an unfavourable position in terms of longitudinal adjustment and cushion/backrest angle, it is moved to a better position.

3 The sunroof is closed if a rollover threatens.

Thanks to these precautionary PRE-SAFE measures the vehicle occupants are in a better seating position even before the accident occurs, enabling the seat belts and airbags to work more efficiently. If the accident is avoided, the preventive tensioning of the seat belt is automatically relaxed and the passengers are able to return the seat and sunroof to their previous positions.

The M-Class has an even better off-road performance when equipped with the Offroad Pro technical package (optional), which includes a steel underride guard, AIRMATIC air suspension and special drive train components:

The transfer case operates in two stages: pressing the "Low Range" key causes the transfer case to shift from the on-road ratio (1:1) to the off-road ratio (2.93:1), enabling the M-Class to make better progress on rough terrain. This is because the drive shafts transfer the high engine torque at a reduced rpm, giving the off-roader a climbing ability of more than 60 per cent depending on the type of terrain. Unlike in the preceding series, changing to the off-road ratio is also possible when on the move, as long as the vehicle speed is not above 40 km/h and the automatic gearshift lever is in the "N" position. The maximum speed for shifting from the off-road ratio to the on-road ratio is 70 km/h.

Two differential locks ensure even better progress on difficult terrain: the two-speed transfer case features an electronically controlled multi-disc differential lock which controls the drive torque between the axles (inter-axle) and develops a locking effect of up to 100 per cent depending on the driving situation. In addition the reinforced rear axle differential has a 100-per-cent inter-wheel lock. A rotary switch in the centre console enables the driver to select the differential locks or select an automatic mode which activates the inter-axle lock when it is required.

2006 Mercedes-Benz ML500
Benz takes a different turn with the new M-Class, starting underneath.
by Paul A. Eisenstein

What happens when the rules change more quickly than your standard-bearer SUV?

That's the question Mercedes-Benz faces in the luxury sport-utility segment, which the automaker joined with the 1997 launch of the ML-Class. When the ML-Class came out, Benz promised it would offer Mercedes quality at the price of a Jeep Grand Cherokee or a Ford Explorer. Both turned out to be optimistic targets, and the first ML-Class, though priced below $40,000 well equipped, faced questions about its quality from the beginning.

It also faced an onslaught of competition. In the years since the ML-Class bowed in 1998, some 21 other entries now competing with Mercedes have significantly redefined the segment.

The game in the mid-size SUV class has changed as a result. With the first ML-Class, the emphasis was on truck-like, off-road performance, rather than the luxurious trappings of a luxury sedan. Recent entries, like segment leader Lexus RX330, have flipped that formula, passable off-road performance offset by all the trappings of a luxury car. That's sound logic, considering that the vast majority of luxury SUV owners ever subject their precious machines to anything rougher than a gravel road.

So, when we flew to southern France to test drive the second-generation ML-Class, we immediately knew it was a distinctly different vehicle than the one that had been introduced eight years before. The 2006 ML350 and ML500 are more than just updates, they are entirely new animals, as distinctive technically as they are visually from what came before.

Profiling the ML

The original ML-Class was tall, boxy and to our eyes, a bit ungainly. The '06 model is longer, wider and sportier. It's no longer a stylistic orphan, now an unmistakable Mercedes, with a far more sculpted appearance than the slab-sided original. The signature design element is the bold grille, all chrome on the ML500, chrome and black on the ML350, unless you opt for the appearance package. It's a bit toothy, and the most controversial element of the new design. On the other hand, there's been nothing but praise for the new, wraparound rear glass, visually pleasing - literally, for it provides exceptional rear visibility.

The flared wheel arches add a macho element, but when you come down to it, you can't ignore the influence of the Lexus RX, and not just in design. Where the original ML-Class was a classic body-on-frame SUV, the 2006 remake is unibody. Don't rush to dismiss that move. After all, Jeep's incredibly capable Grand Cherokee has always been a unibody design.

Among other things, that helped engineers shave about 350 pounds off the weight of Mercedes' big rig, by no means insubstantial, and a definite plus when it comes to performance.

A big surprise was the decision to drop the optional third-row seating package. In fact, we really think of the new ML as a four-seater. There's a middle seat in the second row, but it's atop a hump and now not what you'd call comfortable. Otherwise, the interior package is roomy, by every measurement, with seats truly worthy of a luxury vehicle.

If you're looking for statistics, the new model is six inches longer, two inches wider and has two inches more wheelbase than the '05 ML-Class, and it stands an inch lower, unless you opt for the height-adjustable air suspension package. It all translates into several extra inches inside, front and back.

The cargo compartment is among the larger and more spacious in the segment, though the curvaceous redesign does intrude a bit more than the boxy old ML.

Fully outfitted

The base ML350 is a reasonably well-equipped vehicle, featuring cloth seats and aluminum trim. There are plenty of options available, including an Appearance Package that adds the all-chrome wheels and the first-ever 19-inch wheels on a factory-stock ML-Class. With the ML 500, you get that chromed grille and an upgraded interior, including leather seats, among other things.

This is, of course, a luxury vehicle, and we have come to expect sophisticated "infotainment technology." There is, indeed, a nice CD audio system, with a factory-installed satellite radio receiver. You can get a DVD player with a seven-inch screen for the rear-seat. A dual-screen package will show up within a year of launch.

One of the nicest touches is an integrated Apple iPod package. It will let you plug-and-play through the factory audio system. And if you're a real Apple junkie, there's even an optional iPod docking station, which will charge the player while you're driving.

Unfortunately, we were not overwhelmed by the DVD navigation unit, nor the COMAND system used to control most of the onboard electronics. A new and reportedly more user-friendly control panel is on the way, though not for another year.

"It is a badge of honor for Mercedes to provide new technology," DaimlerChrysler board member Thomas Weber told us. Sure enough, but like the COMAND system and dual-screen video, not all of it will show up at launch. Mercedes is planning to add Bluetooth, permitting cellphones equipped with the technology to connect to the ute's hands-free call system - but not until 2007.

Such delays are not entirely unintentional. Mercedes officials will roll out new features, and spin-off models, on a regular schedule in order to keep the ML fresh. With that in mind, they plan to bring the next AMG version to market in June or July 2006, about the same time an off-road package, with three locking differentials and a dual transfer case, debuts. It may not deliver the go-anywhere capabilities of a Jeep or Land Rover's top-line Range Rover, but during a brief test, we were duly impressed with its ability to navigate deep ruts, thick mud, and reasonably deep water.

Everyday living

The real question is how the standard equipment handles life's everyday challenges, and we got plenty of chances to find out during a couple days of driving en province, when a freak snowstorm blew through the French Riviera. Working our way down a steep mountain trail, our tires caught several patches of black ice. Our ML500 barely blinked, the combination all-wheel-drive and traction control system easily regaining grip. We were similarly impressed by the car's grip on the snow and dirt we faced on a narrow, wooded pass.

Both 500 and 350 are quicker than before. It helps to lose those 350 pounds, but the new V-6 also gains 36 more horsepower. The V-8 is incredibly smooth and quiet, though still kicking out a reassuring roar when you stomp on the throttle.

The new M-Class gets Mercedes' unique seven-speed automatic transmission. The shift-by-wire system achieves the seemingly impossible: improving both performance and mileage, which is up five percent from the gearbox alone. Shifts are normally near invisible, though we noticed on some maneuvers a bit of a slight thump during downshifts.

We were surprised to see an undersized shifter on the column similar to the one in BMW's 7-Series. It takes a while to get familiar with the shift pattern, but our bigger concern is that in the Mercedes, you can go from Park to Drive, say, or Drive to Reverse without pulling the shifter towards you. We inadvertently bumped the lever while parking and thought we'd gone into neutral. But as we slowed to a crawl, it actually shifted to reverse.

A new, double-wishbone front suspension, with a double-link rear, is standard, and extremely competent. There's surprisingly little body roll, even under aggressive maneuvers. This is not an E-Class, but it's a major improvement over the wallowing original. The optional air suspension provides a variety of different ride heights, and automatically hunkers down at highway speeds.

Safety soup

As Dr. Weber boasted, there is plenty of new technology onboard, starting with an all-new, power liftgate, and the keyless entry and ignition system. There's also a full alphabet soup of traction and safety hardware: Electronic Traction Control, or ETS, a system called start-up assistance, Brake Assist, and so on.

The ML now gets Pre-Safe, a system first introduced on the S-Class a couple years back, which takes several steps if it senses a loss of control, adjusting headrests, tightening seatbelts, and closing windows to prevent a possible passenger ejection.

Overall, it's hard not to like the new Mercedes ML-Class. There are flaws, but relatively few. With the second generation, the emphasis is more on sport than utility, but it's flexible and functional enough for all but the most demanding off-roaders. And it's a lot better looking, despite the dental grille. Price will also be a plus, Mercedes expecting to launch the American-made ML350 at somewhere below $40,000, the ML500 in the high-$40,000 range.

Mercedes needs to regain momentum for the ML-Class, which has seen competitors steadily erode sales and market share. The old car's volume peaked at 52,764 in 2000, and has been selling in the mid-30,000 range recently.

Quality is one factor we'll have to wait to report on. The original ML-Class suffered from a variety of "concerns" according to J.D. Power & Associates, and company officials insist it's their top priority on the new ute.

We're reasonably confident the automaker will succeed. It's certainly done well with the rest of the new ML-Class. The '06 model won't create an all-new segment, but it should raise the bar again.

It's the new Chrysler Minnie Van oh I mean Mercedes, and they are calling it an SUV so they can sell some of them. No frame and it's lower to the ground :bash: Combine this with the quality issues and you have a recipe for a waste of money :( Thai I think you got your G just in time. I bet it even goes up in value after they come out with this new M.
