2006 Rear Spoiler

Hello all, first post.

I bought a 2006 SR5 last week and love it! (years ago i had a 97, traded it in on a landrover, and traded that in on this 06)

anyways....love the truck and these forums.


I want to add a rear spoiler for looks but have a few questions:

#1 - I am pretty sure my tail lights are bulbs and not LED's (stock)

#2 - I found on ebay what looks to be a great deal on a brand new OE spoiler color matched and everything

#3 - is that any different than what i would get at the dealer? and what does the dealer charge for the spoiler + install?

#4 - If i did buy the one from ebay, where could i get it installed? (not doing myself).

#5 - If my tail lights are bulbs and the new spoiler is led will it look lame?

that spoiler looks OEM to me. to get them install, you could go to some body shop. of course doing yourself is rather simple or a friend. but if you want, you can go to Pep Boys and ask them to do it for you. since it shouldn't be that hard.

about the LED and tail light. my signal LED light is more red-ish pink. while my brake light is darker red. but it wouldn't look as bad because it's not close to each other rather than mine. the LED light will be much brighter though.

that spoiler is an aftermarket one with LED's.
the mounting holes differ from the OEM spoiler.
The OEM spoiler has sort of a hump in the middle of it and the brake light faces aft instead of down like the one on ebay.

you could do it yourself quite easily. just spend lots of time on locating the holes, center punching them to prevent bit-wander and drill slow. aside from that any body/collision shop should be able to do it for you.

I dont think it looks lame have=ing the led spoiler and bulbs for the tail lights. but you can always upgrade the tail lights to led's later.

What looks lame is leaving the original 3rd brake light active and having the spoiler brake light too. Just clip the green wire to the original 3rd brake light where you tie in the spoilers light. (or remove the bulb from the original one first.

The original 3rd brake light assembly has 5 "claws" olong the bottom of the housing assembly. you need to pry it from the bootom rotating it up a bit at a time until all 5 claws are released. use some thinck plastic to protect the paint when you pry the light out.

I did mine and it took about 2 hours to do. most of the time was spent laying out/locating the holes. the wires are located under a rubber feedthrough on the upper corner, drivers side. I soldered mine and used heatshrink but you can scotch-lock them as well.

if you have an 06 then you have LED tails. but just in case, post a pic before i go looking like an idiot

There are atleast THREE difference versions of OEM spoiler.
1st: OEM with brakelight facing traight back. Made in Japan.
2nd: OEM with a big hump on top for aero dynamic purpose. Made in Japan. Available in 2005.
3rd: OEM with brakelight facing downward. Made in USA, available through Toyota SouthEast Region Distributor.
Any other aftermaket spoilers for sale on eBay or Internet websites are similar to the 3rd OEM stype. However, it's heavier and the mounting holes didn't match the OEM spoiler's template. For this reason, I'll stick with OEM spoiler. You can loan a template from your local dealer if you buy the spoiler from them. $274 isn't bad at all for an OEM.

On an '06 the tail lights are LEDs, the turn signals and reverse lights are bulb.
I got'em on my '05 and love them.

As far as the rear spoiler on the 06. My sport has it and to be honest that is one thing I'm not particularly fond of . I could do with out it ! I don't know why just look's funky to me and does it actually serve a purpose ??? Maybe it will grow on me I guess....

i may skip the spoiler and focus on the interior (ie sound system) for now....

I don't think you're going to be able to find any dealer thats going to sell you a painted spoiler and have it installed for $274. I have a 2005 4Runner and my dealer was asking for $900 for the parts and labor. If you're trying to save money, you should get an aftermarket one. They're going to look similar to the OEM style but not exactly the same. If you want the "hump", you're probably going to have to go through the dealer since I haven't found an aftermarket spoiler that has the "hump".

No! The retail price for the spoiler is $399. $274 is wholesale price that you may able to buy at your local dealer. Installation is quoted $100 + tax at my local dealer. You can loan a TEMPLATE from them with $40 refundable deposit, if you want to do it yourself.

You may want to check burtmanindustries.com, he lists a painted spoiler for $259. Looks like the '03-'04 style without the 'hump' and it has LEDs.
