2006 Skid Plate Question

While going through some deep sand at the beach, I broke the plastic piece at the rear of the engine skid plate in half. What is the purpose of the plastic piece. Do I need to replace it, since the back half of it is gone? What does this plastic "extension" protect? Thanks.

i don't know, but it cant even protect itself from breaking. maybe protect from water splash.

I'm going with it's a rock shield for the tranny pan.
