I will be buying a 2006 sport. I am trying to decide if it would be in my best interest to get the 4 runner with the navigation system or get it with the basic radio system and buy the toyota navigation system from another person(save $1000.00). I was wondering if there are any special processes like getting the dealer to decode the head unit. Also, if I got it from the dealer does it come with any steering wheel controls?

A lot of people do that....the only tricky part is dismantling your dash to remove the old HU and install the new, but by tricky I mean lengthy...there is a step by step walkthrough somewhere on here... And yes steering wheel controls should work, however I dont know if you need an extra accessory for that or not.

some things to consider... If you order the car with the Nav system, it will be covered under the warranty (nice reassurance to have). Also, if you get the JBL radio and replace with a Nav system, I believe you also have to add an extra under-dash speaker to hear the voice commands.
i just bought a 2006 sport edition v8 4runner and it came with the basic radio. thru my dealership, i installed an eclipse navigation system that came with warranty, etc. from the dealer. they did the install during my 1st oil change.

I bought my 06 Sport with the base radio and it still has the steering wheel controls. I will be installing an Eclipse DVD/Nav unit for more than $500 less than the factory nav would have cost. An outside stereo shop will do the install (or I will if I have the time). All controls will still work like factory, plus I'll have more options. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Get the Eclipse unit, if you want to watch DVDs and/or upgrade your audio system. Eclipse is made by Fujitsu-Ten, a division of Toyota. Thus, the interface of the Eclipse navigations are very similar to Toyota's factory nav and I don't think you need to get any wiring harness (should be straight plug-n-play).
Get the factory unit installed at the factory, if you want the backup camera, Bluetooth, and steering wheel controls for the phone and voice activation. To watch DVDs on the factory headunit display, you would need to have the Rear Seat Entertainment System (RSES), rear dvd player. The factory installed navigation is about $2400 without RSES.
Do a search for member Jo Mama, he's installed a 2006 factory navigation on his 2006 4Runner. I believe he's in Canada and nav isn't offered there.
