2006 Sport V6 or V8

I drove both before I decided. Drive the V6 and thought it was ok. You can def tell it is a heavy truck with the V6. Then I drove the V8 and there was no way I was getting back in the V6. I drove the same route with both and the V8 did the hills much easier and suprisingly to me, much quieter.
I am very happy with my decision to get the V8. It is very quiet (I like this a lot), it is very very potent, very responsive and powerful.
The only drawback for me is the gas mileage, but I get about 2-3 mpg less than the V6 is rated to get. The way I see it, either one I bought, I wasn't buying it for fuel efficiency. If I wanted that, I would have bought a civic or similar.

Pick whichever one you prefer based on what you're going to do with it.
IMHO, the gas mileage difference is completely irrelevant when you're buying a vehicle like this. As others said, if you truly cared about gas mileage, you'd be looking at a much more economical vehicle in the first place.

On average I would say I get 19 mpg between city and highway in my V6, for argument lets say I drive exactly 1000 miles a month. That comes out to 52.63 gallons a month. You are all saying the V8 gets 3-4 miles less on average. So we will say that the V8 gets 16, driving 1000 miles a month that is 62.5 gallons a month.
I pay about 2.67 for gas (give or take 10 cents depending on the week). Driving a V6 it would cost me 140.50 a month to drive 1000 miles. Driving a V8 it would cost me 166.87. At the end of the year that totals $1,686 for a V6 and 2002.44. A difference of $316.44. And then add up the number of years you own your 4Runner. Also I would like to note that where I live gas is substantially cheaper than other states in the US. So my figures might be lower than yours.
So I just want to point out that by no means do I think the V8 is pointless or not a fun thing to have, but if you are buying the V8 thinking the mileage difference is nothing to worry about, you might want to think that again. However I am sure that many people don't mind paying the extra 300 a year for a V8... so if you don't mind it go for it. And as I said in my post; if you're looking to buy a 4Runner and are worried about gas mileage, you're looking at the WRONG vehicle entirely.
There are many cool wagons out there these days that can haul just as much inside and get around 30mpg or so if you don't plan to do any towing.

Better still, import a diesel Land Rover, Jeep, or M-class and you an get an SUV with better gas mileage AND one that sounds like a tractor to boot!
I went with the V6 cuz I wanted better mileage and wasn't planning on doing any towing. It still does 0-60 in about 8 seconds. Plenty fast enough for me. It does, however, sound like a baby tractor at times. Must be the aluminum block.

I got the V8 because:
1. Never had a V8 before.
2. I have had a '93 4runner for 10 years now as my primary vehicle and I think I deserve the V8 for putting up with how underpowered my '93 V6 is.
3. My commute to work is very short.
I drove the V6 and I feel it has wonderful power. Now you may be thinking, "Well this dude has been driving an underpowered V6 for 10 years. A Deere riding mower would feel powerful." The 4runner was my primary car. My last weekend car was a 350Z 6 speed. That car had some torque.
I was torn, because I really did not want full-time 4WD. I want partial. However, I think the 4WD drivetrain is so solid in the V8 that I am not expecting too many troubles with it.

i go the v8:
#1: never had a v8 before ( I LOVE the power increase in daily driving scenerios.. uphill on highways requires less frequent downshifts as the torque on this puppy propels it to amazing heights in any gear -- this is the most noteable set to me) I rarely rev it over 3krpm even when pulling on the highway... and it's DAMn quick to high way speeds while keeping the rpm's low)
#2: Resale on a bigger engine is tastier.
#3: ditto on the short commute, and i carpool so it's not an everyday thing. gas is gas.. if you get a good gas mileage car youre gonna wanna drive more because you can and it ends up costing the same ;P at least, friends with their v8's asking you for a lift. And you'll be gasing that v6 more just to keep up with the v8's thus lowering your mpg ;D

The Ford Expedition I had before my 4Runner was actually worth less because it had the 5.4 V8, that and no one wants a big gas suckin SUV.ThatsRicci said:

Now logic would say if you can afford a ~30K 4runner, and the insurance to go with it, $93.69 a year on top of it shouldn't be a big deal. If $93.69 is a large percentage of your pocketbook, then it is quite possible you are looking at the wrong vehicle for a money conscius consumer.
Just my 2 centavos.
P.S. Of course the way one drives, their city to freeway driving ratio, how much one hauls, and the overall condition of one's vehicle all effect gas mileage.
