2006 V8 vs 2004 V8

Does anyone have experience with driving both the 2004 V8 4X4 4runner with 235 HP and the 2006 with 260 HP?

Is there a noticeable power difference between the two? If so, is the increase felt in the low end, high end or across the rev range? Any difference in fuel economy?

I originally had a 2003 Sport V8 and now drive a 2005 V8. They feel the same except for very steep hills. It has a bit more power going up the steep hills in my neighborhood. They sound identical from the interior as well! If you are only replacing your truck for the upgraded engine, don't do it.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys but, isn't it the same engine, just the head that's different. The newer head has VVT-i and the old one doesn't, correct? If this theory is correct, I'm sure you can just swap the heads and the ecu's.

I believe that you are correct on the equipment. I don't know about swapping it out.

I had an '04 2wd V8 and now have an '06 4wd V8. I can tell you the new V8 is noticeably quicker (and my T4R is probably another 200lbs?). The low end feels similar but in the mid-upper rpm you can really feel the extra power.

Keep something in mind too: The old rating of 235 was before Toyota "certified" the power of their motors. Every motor they've done this with has gone down in power. The new V8 is rated at 260hp. The old one, going by what their other motors dropped was probably in the 215-225 range. (The 3.0 Camry motor "lost" 25hp). I would assume an average gain of 40hp with the newer setup over the older setup.

In fact, my '06 is just a tick slower than my buddies '04 with a TRD Supercharger, and that's on the low end (0-10mph). His is also a 4x4 with the V8.

As far as gas mileage, it seems to be similar although I don't drive as much freeway right.

You could use both old ratings, 235 compared to 270.
