Hey guys, this is my first post but I've been a lurker for some time now. I have a 2007 Toyota 4runner that has the "galatic grey" paint job on it. We (being my wife) bought it back in July of 2007. So it's just over 2 years old. We have 14,500 miles on the clock. The SUV is pretty much in like new condition as I've kept it up as best as I can.
I wash it a couple times a month, and wax it usually ever 2 or 3rd wash. I use Mothers/Megueirs cleaners and waxes. I also use their products for washing the car.
We've had no problems or issues with the car. For a while now on the hood, sort of near the middle I started noticing a light spot/faded spot. I just thought it was something under the clear coat (sort of like hard water). I tried my normal ideas on removing the spot and nothing. We ended up driving down to San Bernardino where it was 108 outside at one point. After letting the car bake for a couple days down there while returning home and picking up a nail in the tire I noticed that the spot on the hood got ugly, bubbled in that spot and raised the surface. It's about the size of a 50 cent piece. I checked the book and it said nothing about the paint warranty just rust through. If you run your finger over it (after being washed) it feels lumpy. Whatever happened with that spot the rest of the paint so far is fine, but at angles you can see that it's messed up under the clear coat (if that's even there anymore) It's just messed up.
We have Monday off which I thought about going to the dealer we bought it from and have them take a look at it. My car/truck is 19 years old & on the same paint job with some nicks hear and there, but nothing like this. Her car with as much washing/waxing as it gets (never even been washed by a machine, always hand washed by me) and the paint has issues. She did have a older Toyota at one point and the paint's clear flaked off of that badly. Luckily it blew the motor and she sold it off but it was still maybe 7 years old at that point?
I am just wondering besides the obvious way to approach it do I want someone in the service department & go from there? I am dreading the worst as I know most dealers are ****s and don't want to fix anything with the car for free but I don't feel like it's anything I've done to it.
Just looking for insight or advice. Anything would be helpful!
