2007 4Runner SR5 Daytime Running Lights

Hey Guys, been lurking around here for a while in this awesome forum and have a question hopefully someone can be so kind to answer for me. I've typed in 2007 4Runner DRL in the search engine but came up with nothing.

I just upgraded my alarm system to an automate AM9 system and had it installed by a pro but I could have sworn that when you don't have the headlights on, the daytime running lights are on (which they still are) but I thought they stay on when you turn on the headlights. When I turn on my headlights, the DRL go out and just the parking lights and the headlights are on. Is this normal operation? I could have sworn that the DLR stay on with the parking lights and headlights. I have to go back to the place that did the install of the alarm anyway since my dashboard / instrument panel lights stay on all the time now even when the lights are off. The controls for heat / fan etc. are off when the headlights or parking lights are off but the dash stays on and I know it wasn't like that before they did the work.

Can anyone please verify this for me?

Thanks so much.

Ron.

i have an 08 and my dash lights are always on even if parking/head lights are off? my DRL's are the corner marker lamps aka parking lamps. were you thinking yours were like the high beams or something? with mine once the parking lots come on its basically the same as DRLs but just lights up more of the instruments in the interior.

on a side note i hate these things. so if someone knows of a way to disconnect them on the 08 w/o taking to dealership that would be great. i had an 00 and i was just able to unplug them from the DRL box but im guessing it is not that easy

Thanks for replying, no it's not the high beams I was reffering to. The corner marker lights as you mentioned what I was asking about. I know the top (bright) yellow light is the DRL light and the bottom one is the parking light. I could have sworn that when the parking lights (bottom corner marking light) and headlights were on, so was the top yellow marker light AKA DLR.

I just looked at some pics I took on my other PC when I first bought my truck and in 1 pic, the headlights, parking lights and the DLR were all on at the same time. In another pic, on the same day I took the first pic, DLR is off with the headlights on. Arggggggggg!!! Maybe it was the angle of the truck when I took the pic that makes it look like the DLR is off when the headlights are on?

To answer your question about turning off the DLR, It actually says it in the manual...you can turn off that option if you like.

I'm not home now, that's why I can't access my manual in my truck to help you out on how to disable DLR..sorry.

Regards,

Ron.

My '07 DRL's revert to standard brightness 'parking' lights when the headlights (high or low beam) are selected. If you look at the front of my T4R you can't tell whether the driver has selected parking lights or it's just the DRL's. Does that help?

hmmmmm..I can't seem to find where I can see the pic of your truck. So your saying that when the parking lights or headlights are not on...the DRL are bright, then when you turn on the parking lights or headlights, the DRL convert to low lighting? When I look into the headlight itself, I can see to yellow bulbs at least I think that's what I'm seeing? The bottom one seems to be the parking light and the top seems to be the DLR light. When I get home, I'll pop the hood to get a better look at the headlight assembly.

for leftyguns, I have pictures of my dashboard with my lights off and the dashboard light is not lit. I know the guy did something wrong. I never seen my dash lit when the lights were in the off position. Maybe it was suppose to be that way out of the factory and he fixed it? I'm waiting for his return call today to find out what's up.

Regards,

Ron.

hmm or maybe im crazy? i havent driven it much...at all but especially at night so i could be wrong about the dash lights. now im curious and will have to check it out tonight. im going to take it apart tonight/tomorrow and install an ipod interface so ill check it out in my garage.

and im going to for sure check the manual and figure out how to turn off the DRL's

yeah, check it out. If you are right, maybe it's the design of the 2008 model. If the manuals are the same 2007-2008, then it's definitely in the manual on how to turn the DRL off. I read it. If I remember correctly, I think you have to turn the key to accesory and then press a certain button or something like that.

I have an '08 as well and I'm wondering if it's possible to have a switch for the DRL's so if I wanted to have them off I could just flip a switch and have them off... why? for stealth purposes ;) :biggrin2:

The 4Runner's DRL is amber lights, it doesn't use half power high beams for the DRL.

The instrument cluster lights are brighter when the parking lights are off. It dims when the parking lights are on, unless you have it set at full brightness.

If you don't have DRLs and want them or you have DRLs and don't want it, there is a relay that can be swapped to get or ditch DRLs.

Hi Uneek...Yes, I understand that the DRL are amber, and my dashboard lights, the speedometer, tach, gas, temp were never lit when all the lights were off, parking, head, fogs, DRL..now it stays lit no matter what which was not like that.

Are the DRL suppose to be on when the parking lights and headlights are on is the question I'm shooting here. I have to take the truck back anyway because I also found out last night that my headlights do not turn off by themselves after 30 seconds when you shut the truck off, take the key out of the ignition and lock the doors.

I'm sorry I got talked into this mess. I originally went to the place to have them install my PIAA lights for me and got talked into upgrading my alarm system (which i was really pleased with my original system). I'm calling the guy today to see if he can just rip it out and put everything back to the way it was.

I just need to know about the DRL being on with the headlights. I'm desperate here to know since I have to bring my truck back and don't want to look like an idiot.

Thanks everybody.

Regards,

Ron.

Check my fog mod page for pics of DRL's on and off, etc.

The DRL's are on with the parking lights and off with either the high or low headlights. The dash lights are always on. This info is for a 2007.

Thanks J.A. I always thought they were on at the same time as the headlights. I guess I didn't notice that they turn off when the headlights are on. Same goes with the dashlights, never noticed they were on all the time I guess. I spoke with the guy who did the work on my truck and he said the DRL go off with the headlights on and the dash stays lit all the time since he's a contractor for Toyota dealerships.

But can you or someone clarify for me that when your in the truck and is quiet, when you turn the lights off....do you hear a click in the dash? I never heard it before but heard it last night. the guy says it's the relay switch that's clicking but it's kinda loud a little.

for LEFTYGUNS, I checked the manual last night and ummmm...my bad...you have to contact Toyota to have them turned off. I must have read something else. I apologize.

Thanks!!

Regards,

Ron.

oh thanks for getting back to me, whats funny is i ripped my car apart last night to 'explore' and install an iPod interface and that issue slipped my mind. maybe ill just do the cheapo route and just take the bulbs out for the DRL's

You know? I thought about that for you (pulling the bulbs out) but wouldn't that interfere with your turn signals since the DRL's blink when you use the turn signals?

For J.A. I meant to tell you in my reply that you have a really nice truck and a cool website. Thanks.

yes not to mention it would look funny with the bulbs missing. they were supposed to disable them when i got my clear bra installed but forgot and the dealership is half hour away so ive just been lazy to go back.

yeah I hear ya. I live in Manhattan and bought my truck out on Long Island since I grew up there and like businesses out there. My Dealership where I bought my truck is 2.0 hrs away. I could go to the one in Manhattan but it's congested there and very tight parking all around. Don't want the truck to get hit or something. Dealer in Long Island is very very nice and spacious.
