2007 Limited 4.7 V8 - Mouse Damage

Hello,

I had a nightmare occur last winter when mice came through my HVAC intake vent and nested above the headliner!!!

I pull out a lot of this insulation material and acorns. I still haven’t removed the headliner yet. Dow anyone know what type of insulation was used above the headliner? Luckily there was no physical damage to the headliner visually.

I figure I would pull the headliner and apply a sound deadening/insulation product. Does anyone have and suggest brands to use? I know I don’t want anything made with asphalt because it can cause a stink. What are the best brands of products to look at. Should I apply two layers of different products?


Any recommendations on getting rid of mouse odor from the truck? I know it almost impossible to remove it completely. Fortunately the smell isn’t that strong because I remove the damaged material quickly as well as adding a piece of sheet metal where the cabin air filter installs when the truck isn’t being used. Any other items you suggest I can add to help prevent mice from wanting to move back into my 4runner.

I really don’t want to get rid of my 4Runner because it only has 33k miles on it and I love the 4.7 V8! I’m afraid of what the 6th gen 4Runner power plant options are going to be because I don’t want any type hybrid or EV. I hope they keep the truck an off-road worthy competitor.

I plan to slowly to do a restoration to the truck myself… at least as much as I can handle myself. I’m a HVAC service technician and have worked on all my vehicles since I’ve had a license and am mechanically inclined. I recently replaced all the brakes calipers, rotors, pads, and dual AGM batteries. I also installed a VoltageBoosterPRO so my agm batteries will have the proper charging voltage from the stock alternator. I also a I have a bunch of other parts stockpiled that I need to install on the truck, but I need to take car or the interior issues before I do anything else. At least the mice didn’t destroy the wiring. I do have comprehensive insurance coverage with no deductible but I’m afraid they will total the vehicle.

Any insight or suggestions are appreciated greatly. I have two sets of Focal Utopia component speaker I plan to install if I can rectify the mouse issue.

I've read many good reports on Dyna-mat for sound deadening. As for mice, pull all carpets out and headliner down, hose until water runs clear, apply dish soap, rinse again, and apply vinegar which will neutralize organic odors. Let air dry for a few days.

My new to me 4Runner had some evidence of mice so it was defensive condition 4 on the interior. I took apart the interior including seats. Photo shows rear side panels out which have plenty of room for mice to nest. The mice had pulled some of the side panel padding for nesting but fortunately no nest found.

Wow, low mileage. You may want to think about putting mesh over the fresh air intake under the cowling but maybe your sheet metal does the same. I've read the best way to get rid of smells is fresh air and the sun's UV rays. With that low mileage of a truck I'd think about replacing the headliner if that is where the smell is coming from.

I’m trying to find the part numbers for all the parts for the entire replacement headliner including the correct silver/grey fabric and any insulation that may go between the head liner and roof sheet metal.


Has anyone replaced their headliner? I tried to find one from a scrap yard but they all seem to be in worst shape than the one I currently have…
