2007 rear brakes

2007 runner has pads and shoes (rotor and drum) on the rear. The shoes are used for parking brakes. Are shoes also engaged during regular braking together with pads or only when parking brake is pressed.

No, the pads only work with the p-brake. Unless you drive with the p-brake on they should never wear out.

Thanks, I have small rear squiling noise when lightly presing the brake pedal and I replaced outer pads and had the rotors turned, but still squiling. I applied the grease on the back shims, no luck. That is the reason I was asking if those inner small pads are also engaging when the brake pedal is applied.
