2007 Sport Edition, looking for entertainment system ideas

Hey Folks,

As the title states )) we have an 07 SE, with the basic 6 disc changer system. We have a 2 year old and want to put in a DVD system. So, is it better/cheaper to go with a portable system or get one that is installed? For those of you with an installed system, where are the screens? IN the roof? Headrests? Or indash?

I'd say the portable ones are the cheapest solution. You can get them for less than $50 these days.

I installed an Audiovox VOD102 and it looks great. You can easily connect to the AUX input in the center console and listen through the speakers. It did cost me $415, but it has a really nice 10" screen.

I would recommend a AVIC D3. NAV, DVD, iPod, plays tons of formats. Easy install. Only paid $800 with steering wheel controls, ipod interface etc..

I was looking at an overhead unit but space is tight with the sunroof so I just went with a Sony portable and a travel case that you can mount between the seats, on the center console, or on the back of the seat. Total cost was about $260. I have a 20 month old and she loves the wiggles so I actually mounted it on the head rest so she doesn't kick it with her feet. Doesn't look real pretty but it has black straps that kind of blend in with the headrests and keeps her occupied on long trips. The Sony is nice because you can rotate the screen flat so it is not sticking up above the head rest. You have other options depending what you want to spend. Crutchfield has head rest monitors with dvd players for $1500 installed into a leather clad headrest, or if you are good with electronics they have 7" monitors without dvd from Alpine for $700, you would have to install them and add a dvd player somewhere. I chose a cheaper route till I decide that I want to get an in-dash unit and then add the monitors later.

alpine are very proud of their screens... You can get screens made by other companies for much less and better quality.

As far as portable goes, I'm not a fan. Anything and everything portable is basically a big "steal me" sign. I've had atleast 5 people the past 2 weeks come to my shop and report theft of GPS and portable DVD systems. So sure, you pay about $300 for that portable unit, but if your stuff gets stolen you end up paying a lot more!

Headrest monitors are expensive, but are also probably the most convienient of DVD solutions. Most have individual DVD players for each screen, so if you have kids that fight over what to watch, problem solved. Overheads are cheaper installed and a bigger screen... But they block your view.

In dash DVD is nice for the driver and passenger, and makes installation of an overhead cheaper because you can get a TV without DVD built in. You can then feed the DVD from the indash to the tv saving a couple hundred $$.

We have a moonroof in our 07 so I believe that limits the install of the overhead unit.

Actually a moonroof doesnt restrict you at all as far as installing an overhead...

I actually even find it just as easy as installing in a car without a moonroof.
