Does anyone know if the rear differential on my 2008 4Runner Limited 4WD is a limited slip? I have called 4 dealers and nobody seems to know.

Yeah thats what I thought. The delaer tech says there is a plate on the back of the diff that says "LSB" on the limited slip ones.

I have a v6 so I will need the LS gear oil.

Dealers = useless information.

Except for 2009 4runner Trail Edition, ALL 4runners (2wd and 4wd models, V6 and V8 models) have OPEN differential front and rear...no mechanical LSD. The CENTER differential is a limited-slip unit (Torsen T-3).

On 2wd models, the rear differential has "auto LSD" which is a 100% pure marketing term for traction control on the rear axle to "simulate" a LSD. This "auto LSD" can be turned ON or OFF.

On 4wd models, both front and rear differential are controlled by 4-wheel traction control system. So, i guess that you can say that 4wd models have "auto LSD" on the front and rear axles. 4-wheel traction control canNOT be turned off...unless you do a "do-it-yourself" modification to it.

All models have stability control.

The 2009 4runner Trail Edition has a rear axle locker in addition to the traction control system described above.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I am thinking about changing the factory gear oil out for synthetic and see a lot of guys using the Mobil1 75w90 versus the 80w90 called for by Toyota in the manual. Any ill effects using the 75w90? I get a slight rear diff hum at 60mph and was wanted to see if the synthetic oil would quiet it down.

Is the rear differential on my 2008 4Runner a limited slip? I have the torsen center locking limited slip differential but was wondering if the rear differential was limited slip as well?

A couple times this last winter I got a wicked hum while in 4LO and while in 4HI now I get the traditional 4x4 wiggle sensation when in a tight-ish turn at slow to almost stop speeds (backing out of a space etc). Fixable or normal?
