2008 4Runner Changes

Have you tried cranking it while running? That seems to reset much of the electronics. No harm to the starter either.

Yea, sadly it doesn't work either. Although I notice that when you flip the switch it, nothing happens for 3 seconds.

I just compared the model codes of the 2008 and 2007 4Runner and from these sheets we can't conclude that the Sport Edition is discontinued because the spec sheet for 2007 does not mention the Sport Edtion either and yet there was a Sport Edition availiable for 2007. Furthermore I beleive the Sport Edition technically is an SR5 and thus would explain why there was no seperate model code for the Sport Edition
That is correct. The Sport edition is just technically a package of the SR5. When I ordered me SE a months back, I noticed that.

To those that are waiting for JP4RNR's other files, I am going to uploaded them to one of those online host sites. They're about 20+ Megs and would kill my webspace and bandwidth allotment. I'll post here when done. Sorry about the delay!

Re: Auto LSD for 4WD V6

Thanks for the info. Question, the Auto LSD for 4WD V6, I thought that the current 4WD V6 has this? If you are in 4HI, it was my understanding that you are using the LSD by torsen. From the PDF you posted, I can't tell if Toyota is just adding a new indicator on the drivers panel to let you know that when the LSD is active?

And when you go to 4LO, then you start using ATRAC with the brake system.

Just to clarify...the new '08 probably has a separate indicator (??) or just another marketing term. Basically, "auto LSD" was used in 2wd 4runners since the beginning (2003). It could be that many people were getting confused that the 2wd has this "feature" and the 4wd did not. Thus, they are making is "standard" on all 4runners...Auto LSD on both axles for 4wd and on rear axle for 2wd. My guess.

When YOUR 4runner is in 4 HI, ATRAC is ON and is monitoring your 4wheels at any speed. As with most other brands with ATRAC, this system does decrease it's intervention at highway speed, which is where VSC algorithm takes over. You cannot shut ATRAC off. You can only shut VSC off by locking the center diff and by the new button on '08 models.

Torsen is your center differential. It is always working.

IMO, hopefully the VSC off button will fully disable VSC from kicking in. Can't remember if it was the fancy pedal footwork on the IS and Avalon, after 30mph VSC still kicks in.

I hope Toyota is finally letting loose and let owners fully enjoy the power they paid for. This is a step in the right direction for Toyotas to be vehicles for enthusiasts.

The VSC switch should make a few people here happy! Now, of course, how can incorporate this switch to the older 4runners?

I am going to make this a "sticky" at the top of this forum.

Thanks for the info!

I'd like to have it done on my '05...
Keep us posted.

Just saw this posted at Toyota:
4Runner will improve its numerous standard safety features on all models with the addition of driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags and first- and second-row side-curtain airbags with roll-over sensor. For 2008 the MSRP will increase $380 for SR5 and Sport Edition models and $350 for Limited models. The 4Runner MSRP ranges from $28,015 for the 2WD SR5 V6 to $38,735 for the 4WD Limited V8. The total 4Runner average MSRP increases $376 or 1.2 percent.

Hard to copy and paste the text, but here is the info straight from Toyota.

2008MY 4RUNNER
Touted as the most dependable and rugged mid-sized SUV, the 2008MY 4Runner will improve
its already high level of standard safety features with the addition of driver and passenger side
and first and second row curtain shield airbags with roll-over sensors across all models. The
2008MY MSRP will increase $380 for SR5 and Sport Edition models and $350 for LTD models
and remains competitively priced at $28,015 for the 4x2 SR5 V6 to $38,735 for the 4x4 Limited
V8.
In addition for the 2008MY, 4Runner will offer three new Special Value Packages containing
high volume attractive spec to significantly enhance 4Runner

4. Seat belt warning system

Hopefully there won't be any invasive changes to the seat belt warning system. Some vehicles nowadays have a seat belt reminder BEEP that will keep beeping at you and never shut up, even when you're driving offroad at just 15mph! The 4Runner's blinking light is excellent, hopefully they will not add a beep to it.

2009 4runner

saw what may be the 2009 4runner today in san diego county. first thing i checked was the rear suspension ... it was independent and looked like aluminum components... it looked a lot like the Highlander on steroids...although it had michigan plates i saw some of the same molding around the window that my 2006 4runner has..so i figure it was a mule toyota was testing and used the michigan plates to throw off any witnesses.

There will be 4 minor changes to the 2008 4Runner...

2.Brake System Control
a.VSV off switch will be used on all models

3. Tire Pressure Warning System

Not sure how I missed this thread but (now that I saw it referenced) I wouldn't mind digging into it to come up with a stock mod retrofit rather than the VSC switch hack.
Also I'm hoping the TPMS system change that allows for reset. The T4R is one of the few Toys out there that doesn't have a reset so you need to shell out $ at the stealer.

Looked at the documents attached earlier and I'm dissapointed.
Adding the VSC switch as done on the '08 would also involve replacing the Skid Control ECU. Not so easy because it looks like they relocated it under the hood plus it is $$$ (need to wait a few years for the '08's to hit the scrap yards.)
The TPMS system also doesn't have the user reset I was hoping for.

My local dealer is refuting the VSC option and the LSD option on 08's

Hey folks, not trying to pee in anyones pool here, but my local dealer is telling me these features are not so.

I almost headed up the street to trade my 06 in on an 08 when I read this, but now I guess Im just going to do the ARB airlocker thing to it

and turning off the VSC in 2W drive mode. why do they think we are all hoon's? :D

I know I am

Yee Har!

ARB is a better diff anyways. Never trust a dealer about new features when there are old models hanging around...

VSC off is a reality.. Pic from DonnyB

and the LSD in the 08?

Rock thanks man. Very Groovey. Clearly my local dealer is unaware the sun is out today.

Can anyone verify there is an LSD option in the 08?

The detail has to be on the sticker on the drivers door.
