2008 Headlight Upgrades

First off, I am not interested in changing to HIDs, so please don't hijack this thread like others I did a search for on the forum.

1) The high beams are 9005 HB3 type 60W. I replaced them with Sylvania Silverstars which I really like. Have them on other vehicles and my Harley. The 9005 Silverstars are 65W, anyone have any melted plastic headlight cover stories?

2) The low beams are H11s which is a bulb type that Silvania does not make Silverstars for. link What bright white bulbs have others had some experience with please?

On a related topic, I changed out the interior dome lights to these Putco LEDs link , what a difference!

1) Unless youre in the habit of running your highbeams on all the time, Id say risk of heat related damage is minimal.

2) PIAA makes a "white" H11 bulb but I find it to be overpriced and prone to burnout.

Interior LEDs are on my short list, cant wait to do that.

Are you absolutely sure you do not want HIDs?:moon:

I ran PIAA 4000K and they worked exceptionally well, but now im running hid's and its a hell of a difference. I still have the PIAA's, if you're interested in them let me know. They are pretty much brand new.

First of all welcome :welcome: Second of all I am running the Sylvania 9005 and 9006's and I am duly impressed. The difference was astounding! Made the factory lights look VERY yellow (as suggested here or on another forum I replaced half of my lights and then checked it out) So far I have not had any issues with heat. It has only been a couple of weeks though but I drive with them on all the time.

I have had silver star 9005s and 9006s in my 04 for years now with no problems. They do burn out quicker than standard bulbs.

I ran into the same problem with my 08 as you since there is no silverstar H11 bulb. A year ago They (Sylvania) told me in an email it was in development???? I ended up going with MTEC H11 bulbs. They are 4350K, so just a little bluer than the silverstar ultras at (4100K). They supposedly have 100Watt output with 55 Watt input. They are a little cheaper than other silverstar bulbs and have decent light output. I have had them in for a little over a year with no problems. Below is a link to an ebay auction. I have had the silverstars in my High beams and fogs in the 08 for the same time frame as well with no issues or burn outs.

Hmmmm the price on e-bay for a pair is about $15 dollars per pair cheaper too. That means 9006's X2 = $80 and 9005's x1= $40 total 120.00 versus $24 per pair x 3 or 72 dollars (and a lifetime guarantee?) so IF my math is right the savings is enough to by additional sets so that even if you do burn one out you have 1, spares on hand and 2 an original package to send them back for replacement in. NICE! And if they look as goos as they do in the picture I would be willing to change mine.

The best non-Hid setup for 2006 model year and after is H9 low beams in the projectors, and 9011 HIR-1 in the hi-beams.

A lot of the '03 to '05 guys used a highbeam bulb in their lowbeam bulb socket. It just takes a slight modification of the bulb base to make it work perfectly. You get a bunch more candle power using the highbeam bulb and you don't blind oncoming drivers because you're still using the same reflector housing, I made the switch about two years ago and it makes an excellent improvement.

Can you projector guys do something similar? If so, that would probably be your best option.

These new single-filament 65w bulbs are rapidly gaining popularity amongst automakers for use primarily in high-beam headlamps, often in conjunction with H11 bulbs for the low beams. H9 is an extremely high output design (2100 lumens) with an extremely white light color.
H9 bulbs are not physically interchangeable with any 9000-series bulb. As with H8 and H11, these are currently tough to find in the aftermarket.

the H11 has different base keys than its H9 high-beam and H8 fog lamp counterparts. Somebody goofed on the spec, though, for the difference between H11 and H9 base keys is insufficient; it's too easy to install an H9 bulb where an H11 belongs. The difference in light output between these two designs is enormous (1350 lumens from the H11, 2100 from the H9), so putting an H9 in place of an H11 will obviously cause the lamp to produce a lot more light.

look at this link on ebay, this is for the 9007 bulbs but I purchased 2 sets of 9006's and 1 set of 9005's and it said the same thing scroll down.....

You should use the H9 bulb to replace the H11 low beam, and use HIR-1 ( 9011 ) to replace the 9005/HB3 hi beam.

I can see why he had an issue with using the 9006 as a replacement for the H11. The filament in the H11 is in a different position than the filament in the 9006 so it would cause problems in the projector as the light would not be focused properly. The filament in the H9 is in the same location as the H11.
