2008 SR5 140,000 Mile Service Overhaul?

Hello everyone! This is a great Website and it's always nice to visit here and read all the informative posts.

My trusty 2008 SR5 is at 140,000 miles and it's time for a Maintenance Overhaul before Winter sets in. I live along Lake Erie and the last couple Winters have been absolutely BRUTAL but my 4-Runner has never let me down! I'm a big believer in preventative maintenance and unlike the 70,000 mile Service Overhaul the 140K maintenance overhaul isn't as straight forward in the Service Manual. I'm asking for idea's below of what should be done?

The last Overhaul Service was performed at 70,000 Miles 3 years ago per Toyota Maintenance Manual and Dealership recommendations. The same Dealership has serviced the vehicle since new. NO ONE else has ever touched it!

70K Overhaul/Service performed 3 years ago included:

New set of Micheline LTX M/S 2's
4 wheel alignment
New front Brakes & Rotors.
New Front Caliper/Piston (Paid for by Toyota Extended Warranty)
New Rear Brakes/Rotors Machined.
New Battery
Transmission Serviced/Fluid Replaced
Oil Change/Full Lube/Engine & Cabin Filters
New Plugs/Tune-Up/Throttle Body Cleaned
New Catalytic Converters paid for by Toyota Corp.

Last Winter was hard on the "Silver Bullet" and a Front Bearing needed replaced. I'm assuming the Rear Bearing will also need replaced because there's grease on my wheel just like when the Front bearing wore out. While in the Dealership last Winter I also had the Coolant System Flushed/Filled.

I've compiled a LIST BELOW of the work I want performed for the 140K Service. I'm hoping to get several more years out of the "Silver Bullet" and I realize I have to keep up on maintenance considering the Climate I live in plus putting 25,000 (mainly highway) miles on the vehicle each year. Any info on additional Service, Parts and Preventative Maintenance is Greatly Appreciated! I want to be prepared in case we have another Winter like the last two.

SR5 140,000 Mile Service Overhaul:

New set of Michelin LTX M/S 2 Tires.
New Rear Bearing
New Front Brake Pads
Transmission Service
New Engine Belts (never been changed)
New Thermostat?
New Radiator Hose?
Oil/Filter/Lube always done every 3k-5k miles.

What have I missed?

Nice Catch Ralph From Texas...

Forgot to mention my SR5 has the 4.0 Liter V-6 Engine.

Four-Wheel Drive, Center Locking Diff, Tow Package (never used for towing).

If it were me and the following items hadn't been done in a while, I would do:

-Front diff fluid
-Rear diff fluid
-Transfer case fluid
-Maybe spark plugs if they're over 30k old
-ATF drain and refill
-Coolant, but it sounds like that was recently done
-Grease all zerks
-Flush the brake fluid
-A couple "turkey basters" through the power steering reservoir
-New PCV valve
-Hoses and belt are a great idea, also inspect all the pulleys while the belt is off, they tend to go bad, I just replaced all mine plus a new OEM tensioner
-Thermostat is also a good idea if it's never been replaced, also inspect the water pump to ensure it's not leaking
-Oil with a good synthetic 5w30 for those cold winters
-Check the air filter

I'm sure there are a few other things I'm missing that others will fill in, but IMO starting fresh with all new fluids, filters, and a once-over is probably the best way to get ready for a cold and snowy winter...not like I know much about that though. :crybaby:

When you say belts, is that the serpentine (acessory) AND timing belt? Timing belt is buried as you may know, and usually they water pump is done at the same time (I didnt see pump mentioned). They say the service life is 180K, but usually people do it well before 150k or so. I usually hear people changing them at 100k to be safe.

If you pay to have the belt done, expect it to cost about $1k or so. To do it yourself is around $400 in parts to include the water pump and some other important stuff.

Its a V-6 the op mention so no timing belt its a timing chain no maintance on that. And the water pump is on the outside of the motor not inside.

5100s and Fj springs. lol
I think you've got a good handle on things with the battery, brakes, bearing and tires. Would be a shame to put Michelins on an old suspension. Lol

Re

JEL,

Sounds like some good advice having ALL the Fluids changed (except Coolant which was done last year) since I'm keeping the vehicle and live in a Climate with a solid 5 months of Winter.

I'm also going to have the Serpertine Belt replaced, inspect pulleys, new PCV valve, Coolant Hose and thermostat.

Please explain "Turkey Basters" through Power Steering Resevoir?

What are "Zerks"? Are these the same as propeller Shafts, U joints?

Also, as I indicted last Winter the vehicle was making a humming noise and the vehicles one side complete Bearing Assembly had to be replaced for $435.00 dollars.

Now the Rear Aluminum Wheel and inside of tire has Oil on it... NO road Noise like when front Bearing went. Would this be an Axle Seal or something even more complex? What might this possibly cost?

Before purchasing the 2008 SR5 I owned a 1997 T4R Limited until sold with approximately 240,000 miles on it. I NEVER had a single Bearing, Axle Seal, etc. go on it!

Any ideas why this 2008 SR5 is chewing up bearings/Axle Seals?

If you have fluid on the inside of your rear wheels it's got to be either brake fluid or differential fluid.

If it's brake fluid, you probably have a rusted out brake line or a problem with your caliper.

If it's differential fluid then you have a bad axle seal. If it's a bad axle seal, you need to figure out why it went out. The rear ones don't typically just fail with age. Usually you'll find that you have a clogged breather plug and the differential can't vent pressure as heat builds up, or that you've got a bad bearing which is allowing the axle itself to wobble slightly damaging the seal. You can replace the seal but you'll be doing it again if you don't fix the root cause that killed the axle seal.

Zerks are grease fittings. A zerk fitting is what you would attach your grease gun to to pump grease into a greasable system. There are 3 on the rear driveshaft and 3 on the front driveshaft on a stock 4x4 setup.
