2008 Urban Package Radio ?

You have been helpful so much about all this for a new guy. I am to buy Monday a 2008 v6 4x4 " urban Package " nice car all over, Blizzard White 80,000 miles ,BUT I read some things about the Tom Tom radio system ,Is that a deal breaker?

It seems as it doesnt work as well or is a funky system or needs upgrading chip.

Can it be changed to a regular toyota radio or does that stop the controls on the steering wheel ?

Wiring may be all diffrent.
Am I over worring something thats ok ?

I know just enough to be dangerious.

From what I know, I had the unit, it was the best sounding unit I had in my truck (out of 3 eclipse, and 1 pioneer), but it doesn't have updated software past 2009, I contacted tom tom and they said they have no updates available, that is what made me sell mine, I'd contact them and double check, otherwise a really nice unit in my opinion, let me know what they say, I'd be interested in another if they did offer updates.

also, the wiring is different from other stock 4th gens if you do decide to go back to a "stock" toyota HU

i have an 08 urban runner. the tom tom is a total pile of crap. i can't wait to get something different in there. fullsize nav unit. i just can't seem to pull the trigger on a 1k unit right now. i will do it soon, probably right after i get tires. its nice to have but doesn't have any updates or anything. its just a generic old gps.

Two words, replace it. The idea for the head unit is a good one, but the execution fails miserably. In particular the inability to update the maps and small screen.
I finally got around to replacing mine last summer (see link in sig) and at the time Crutchfield did not have the wiring diagram or a correct harness. I gave their research department a heads-up and I bet they do now. Either way there are how-to's on the forum here and there are adapters that allow you to continue to use the steering wheel controls.
Don't let the TomTom dissuade you, I love my 08 Blizzard Pearl Urban Runner and you will too!

I agree 100%. Buy the UR and ditch the TomTom. I also wasn't a fan of the seats and had leather put in instead.

Are you saying you can put a later version in for about $1000.00 ?

Just ask toyota ? any model ?

its only good for the trim pieces around the radio. now you can upgrade to any after market double din! i still use my stock eclipse toyota radio.... because well, it works. also street thugs dont want the fugly radio anyways

There is no later version! It was such a POS that they stopped making it and supporting it. There are only aftermarket versions or Scion/Eclips versions. Go to the Audio section and do a search. There are tons of threads about this.

Just find a double din head unit and install it. Use the wireing harness from the Dum Dum unit and splice it into the wires of your new unit. Plug it in. you will also need the adaptor for the steering wheel controls.

** Ths Urban Runners have a different wireing harness than every other 4Runner! ** If you have the original paper work that came with the UR, the diagram is in there. If not, I have a digital copy of it somewhere that I can send you. Just PM me.

Also... If you have a shop install a different HU for you, make sure they re-use the trim piece from the Dum Dum.

in response as I'm new I thought Toyota might have a later radio that fit that was stock but better.

I understand now its after mrkt. type swap done by a radio shop , I got it. Pioneer or Kenwood etc.
