2009 4 Runner ipod question

Just bought a 2009 4Runner with navigation. Want to add ipod interface beyond aux input. What is the best and or least expensive route? Is Toyota ipod interface kit needed or is their an aftermarket solution?

Is it a Trail Edition or Urban Runner with the tom-tom navigation, or a Toyota full screen navigation? The Tomtom has a different Toyota IPod interface.

I have a USA Spec iPod adapter that I mounted in the center console.

I liked it because not only could you used the stereo controls to change tracks but it kept it charged vs the Aux inputs that don't allow you to control any functions.

Super fast to install. Comes with vehicle specific install instructions. Think it took 30 mins to get it in.

^^^ I second the USA Spec. It's pretty easy to install, works brilliantly, and since it also has an aux in, I can run my Sirius receiver through it as well. Toggling between ipod playlists and the aux-in is as simple as switching discs on your head unit (or steering wheel).
The only "downside" is that you can no longer play CD's in your changer, as the US Spec unit uses the CD changer controls. Not an issue for me, and I'm sure it's not an issue for many ipod user.
