It might be a typo for the rear diff since I can't find any other info to back this up. I'll believe it when I see it on Toyota's site listign the option.

That article is about upcoming changes for 2009. My guess is that they'll discontinue the Urban Runner option package (making it a 2008-only thing), and replace it with this Trail Edition package.

Toyota has been doing a lot of that under the Lexus brand - making a special option package that's unique to only one model year. It helps create some new interest from year to year, and it adds a sense of a special, "limited edition" version of the car.

The new LC 70 is what I'm droolin' over the most... With 4,5l V8 CRTDI.... *drool*

It would be a solid step back towards the Runner's off road roots and swapping over the drivetrain (with a 5 speed too) from the locked FJs would be a solid upgrade for the 4Runner and perform fine for the most of us.
I still don't see the locker in the 4Runners since I'm not sure Toyota is sure about the 5th gens depending on gas prices since the FJ has filled the off road niche in Toyota's SUV lineup.

The LC 70 would be nice but that isn't available in the US so it's hard for us to *drool* over something we can't buy.

The Trail Edition 4Runner is for real. I can't tell you how or why I know, but I can say that I have insider information. This 4Runner is exactly why I've been holding off on buying an '08.

I'm surprised that you guys are doubting it, considering that the information comes from the Car and Driver website.

The only thing I'm trying to find out right now is if the Trail Edition will have 17" wheels or something similar to the 16" wheels on the FJ.

I've been a longtime lurker in this forum and I noticed many members say that the 4Runner is going away from its offroad roots. Now I think those same people will change their tune when they see this new Trail Edition.

The Urban Runner was new in '08. It is more of an on-road vehicle which is why it is called "Urban" and has the 18" wheels.

This new Trail Edition will be just the opposite. Look for the Bilstein shocks and definitely the locking rear differential along with smaller wheels than the Urban Runner.

That info looked more last minute blogging more than actual hard fact. I'll believe it when more sites including Toyota's have real official info.

I can hope for KDSS off the land cruiser, or some other electronic sway disconnect... but I'm not holding my breath. How about some nicer approach and departure angles while they're at it as well.

Wow, there's now five trims for the V6 4WD platform. This one is an upgrade to the SR5 with SE features (tubular steps/racks and color key) like the Urban was an upgrade (some Limited features) on the SE. Maybe in 2010 there'll be an upgrade package for Limiteds though I'm not sure where they'll pull those features from... GX maybe?

Maybe the 16s are the TRD Off-Road wheels from the Tacoma.

It should be possible to add the e-locker to existing 4Rs if it's the same as Tacomas and FJCs.

It's simple, this way it allows Toyota to some what keep the 4Runner line "fresh".

Toyota knew from the getgo when VSC was introduced back in 1998 for Lexus models, reviews criticized the absence of a defeat switch/button and again when Lexus got VDIM. Reviews balantly said, with the electronic nannies the IS can't compete with the 3-series and just isn't as fun when power keeps getting cut. Until 2007 VDIM off was added for Lexus and 2008 VSC off for the 4Runner. Another example, is the V6 GS. It had a 3.0 V6 for 2006 when the IS came out of the gates with a 3.5 V6. In 2007, the GS got the 3.5 V6.

Manufacturers don't want to debut everything in the beginning, they need to save something for a mid cycle refresh.

Cool...a 4 door FJ!! I know that more than a few people would really like to have a more practical FJ. Hopefully, this 4runner edition will have the same features as the FJ TT SE...all white with black bumpers, black powdercoated rims, rock sliders, rear locker + super ATRAC, higher front lift, and slightly more wheel articulation (from smaller sway bars).

Each year for the FJ, there has been a unique special edition (3200 production builds). Each year, there is a different name for the special edition. In 2007, it was TRD SE. In 2008, it is TT SE (Trail Team Special Edition). My guess is that the 4runner TT SE will be similar to the FJ TT SE (with stuff listed above). Otherwise, Toyota would have called it something other than TT SE.

I wonder if it will have waterproof cloth and rubber flooring like the FJ???? That would be cool! However, i hope that the 4runner driver's seat will retain lumbar support (missing on FJ).

With gas prices going up and poor economy, Toyota (and other brands) cannot afford to add things to their gas guzzlers to raise the price too much.
