It looks huge! Why the heck do they keep making all their vehicles bigger? I want the return of a 4Runner the size of the third gen 96-02 models. Thanks for posting the pics!
 
If thats the next gen 4runner, it looks like they are considering the comfort of the back and 3rd row passengers in a truck base SUV.
Looks bulky to use offroad. Now is the time to buy those leftovers 2006 - 09 models, or the 09 Trail Edition. As what i have read its hard to beat the marriage of ATRAC and Rear Locker in the Trail Teams Edition :)
 
Wow, interesting photo's. I think these are the first legit spy photo's I've seen of what could possibly be the 5th gen 4R. Thanks for posting.

The spy photo's never due anything justice. I just hope it doesn't share the same lines and overall look of the new Highlander, Sequoia, LC, etc. because they all look the same IMO.

I'm curious how it will be spec'd out regarding engine, drivetrain, suspension, dimensions, etc. I'm all for having more creature comforts in the cabin, so long as it doesn't take away from it's off-road prowess. Like jjbenzo said, I hope it doesn't get any bigger. I think the 4th gen is perfect for a mid-sized SUV and is even a little close in size to becoming a trail hog for those who go off road. I just hope the 5th gen isn't much, if at all, bigger than the 4th gen.
 
It would be stupid to make it bigger. If someone wants a bigger SUV they should buy the Sequoia. IMO there shouldn't be a 3rd row seat in 4runners. Buy a damn Sequoia if u want a 3rd row seat. I really hope the 4runner doesnt turn into a big SUV. Like jjbenzo said, I'd love if they kept it smaller. I love the size of the 3rd gens and i think the 4th gen is the biggest size i'd buy.

The problem is that this 5th gen 4runner was probably designed BEFORE our economy went to hell...so, back then (3-5 years ago), a bigger 4runner was a good idea...to slot it right below the new fullsize Sequoia. (Remember, Toyota looked really out of touch when the new Sequoia came out! :D That is the problem, these vehicles are designed at least 3-5 years before...hell, the previous Land Cruiser [TLC100] took like 7 years from design to production.)
 
Looks can be deceiving as far as actual size. I know that the silhouette in first photo of the undercarriage sure looks the remarkably the same as my 03Runner with steps removed ie: fuel tank,exhaust and crossover bracing...

But everything until the actual release is only unsubstantiated speculation....

I can't help but think this is a 3rd gen pic. Even the picture quality looks outdated?

I agree with Thai that this looks like a product of pre-'08 gas price spike/recession. The pics are awful quality but it looks to me like a big improvement in approach angle and a small improvement in departure angle and maybe even ground clearance too - but it may just be deceptive cuz I agree with Tom that it seems like the side steps are removed. I 'm also hoping they'll carry over the '09 trail edition's rear locker to the 5th gen and offer it on more trim levels - it should be available on the Limited!!!

It looks more FJ Cruiseriish in it's windshield rake than the 4th gen - hopefully that will translate into a bit more headroom especially when equpped with moonroof. They better retain the power down rear window in the tailgate that has always been part of the T4R.

Will be interesting to see if it gets the big V8 as an option - this thing will be a beast if it does!

Overall though I'm pleased by these spy pics because it looks like the T4R is evolving in a positive direction from an enthusiast's standpoint. I'm fairly confident that the marketing and design folks pay attention to these boards and hopefully they've learned what T4R enthusiasts like and dislike. I have to think that the appearance of rear locker on most everyone's wishlists on boards like this and others had somethign to do with the creation of the Trail Edition.

However, I'm afraid that after the first year it probably won't sell that well if it gets crappy mileage and the economy doesn't pickup - sales of all SUVs have been in the toilet for the last year :(
 
Personally, I find the size of the 4th gen to be perfect. It is roomy and comfy w/o being too big. I don't want to 5th gen to be any larger or smaller, a little larger cargo area would be nice.

I agree with the comments that a 4Runner should dump the 3rd row seating and if you want a larger truck, run with the Tundra/Seq.

I love the current body design, I'd like to see a better engine and interior.

Mainly, I want to know when we are going to see the 5th Gen 4Runner... As in what year?

I'm not sure that really means anything. I remember in the 09 Land Cruiser/LX spy photos that floated around last year, it was heavily covered and they attached the current Lexus LX lights on it too.

If you look closely at this pic, you can see that the tail lights are not attached flush and seems to be added just so they have a way to visibly signal.

It is interesting that this article has the 4runner listed as a 2011 instead of a 2010.
 
The front bumper lines up with the rest of the front end of the car instead of the bumper sticking way out in front like current models. I like it. My first reaction is that it looks much taller.

Yes, but the tails don't look like the recent '06+ LED's which makes me think these are old spy shots of the 4th Gen mid-model refresh.

You may be right but on the same website, they posted the 2011 Sienna that was taken on the same test run as this possible 4runner. Can someone who knows the 2003 version of the Sienna confirm if this camoed sienna's shape looks the same? I think that would help confirm one way or the other if the is 4runner pic was taken of the 4th gen.

The windshield is more vertical in the spy pics like the Gen 3 than the Gen 4. Is it me or is the approach angle better in the spy pic versus the Gen 4.5?

The Sienna in the spy pics has a different rear light cluster, front fascia, and has smaller window by the A-pillar/side mirror vs. the current model. IMO all minivans look egg shaped, especially the Previa. I still prefer the Toyota Alphard vs. the Estima/Sienna.

These spy pics look promising. I just hope it doesn't get much bigger on the outside. Also, if the Sequoia can get 3 engine options, why can't the 4runner? It's great that it doesn't take after the sillouhette of any of the current toyota suv lineup. It'd be great to have its own look, yet still be distinguishable as a 4runner. I wonder how the GX will look. Please keep the rolldown rear window... OK I'm babbling now... bye.
