2010 4Runner XM Radio

I have several questions regarding XM Radio. We purchased a 2010 4Runner SR5 last night and we are trying to figure out the best way to add XM Radio to it. I have seen a few older posts that say if the Radio has the AM / SAT button there may be an after market kit we can buy to take advantage of that. So my questions are:

If it has the AM / SAT button, does it just need something simple added to the radio? Or does it still need to have the XM Antenna added and a lot of interior work to set it up? (I saw something listed as Universal Transceiver Link or something to that effect on the options)

Is it possible to buy the factory XM Radio kit parts that we need some where less expensive and then pay the dealer to install it (Or if it was just adding something to the back of the radio (ie no antenna install) could I do that myself pretty easily)?

Is their an after market kit available that would take advantage of the AM / SAT button on the radio that would be cheaper and easier to install than the factory version?

Are there any vehicle specific mounts for the 2010 4Runner that I could use with the current radio I already have? (I have an older adio I think a skyfi)

I appreciate all replies. I'm hoping to figure out the best cost/aesthetic trade off for adding XM Radio to it.

Many here have traded thier stock XM-installed units out for GPS and other systems. You could probably get a stock unit on the cheap. Only issue then would be the antenna. Might just find all the wires in place for that as XM is more common on these vehicles than not. I'm no electronics guru that's for sure.

How can I tell if the wires for the antenna are already installed (or any other necessary equipment)?

If you were to buy it from the dealer, it will probably cost quite a bit for both the product and the installation. If you planning on keeping the stock head unit/ stereo, I would just get a plug and play kit from either XM or Sirius. Some Sirius units offer A-la-cart packages, where you can pick up to so many stations and pay like $6.99 a month plus applicable sales tax, music royalty, etc.

If your planning on upgrading to a better stereo, in dash nav, DVD, etc. then just wait and get a XM/Sirius unit to match that manufacturer so you can have a nice hidden installation.

All 2010 4Runner radios have built-in XM capability and sharkfin antenna. There is nothing additional to buy other than the subscription.

Aren't they still offering the 3 month free trial?

It took a couple of days for mine to start up. Also, I let it expire without signing up and then was offered a rate of $77+$12 fees for the next year. I have to call to cancel or they will keep charging my card for future years.

All 2010 4Runner radios have built-in XM capability and sharkfin antenna. There is nothing additional to buy other than the subscription.

Ours worked when we drove off the lot. Bummed though as we don't get Stern in the free trial.

Did your 4runner specifically list xm radio on the options? Ours does not, but the radio has the AM/SAT button. Nothing happens when we press it though. Is there something we need to do to activate it? When you first purchased it did pressing the AM/SAT button not work for a day or two? Thanks! This is good information!

From the Toyota website for a base model 4x2 SR5...

"AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, eight speakers, XM compatible [6] (additional hardware & subscription required)"

My apologies... I thought all the non-NAV units were the same. The following is OPTIONAL!!

AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability, eight speakers, XM® Radio [2] (includes 90-day trial subscription), USB [3] port with iPod® [4] connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth® [5] wireless technology


Anyway, call your dealership to ask how much the additional hardware is to enable XM on your base stereo. My guess is it will be about $150 bucks.... but that's just a guess.
