2010 Exhaust Dimensions?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the pipe dimensions so I can order the correct flowmaster 50 series. This is what I think: 2.25 center in/2.25 staggered out. This is based on the 4th GEN though. I wasn't sure if the dimensions might have changed for the 5th GEN.

I just had a 50 series SUV muffler installed (Flowmaster 52557) and am also running the DT long tube headers. The sound drones pretty bad inside the truck right now but outside sounds pretty good. I am actually looking into some sound-deadening undercoat right now. Not sure if that is gonna do it...

Did you remove the resonator?

If you didn't remove the resonator I guess the headers must be causing most of the interior drone because I haven't heard this complaint unless removing thre resonator or not running the pipe to the rear tire. Must be the headers? Thanks for your response, I'm ordering them now.

I don't think the 5th Gen has a resonator, at least I didn't see one when I was under there poking around. I have seen this discussion regarding the 4th Gen since they came with a resonator but not the 5th. I will have to take a closer to verify that.

1traildriver's correct... there is no resonator on 5th Gens. The DT long tube headers do eliminate the front pre cats but I had no droning at all from just the headers and stock muffler before the Flowmaster 44 eXtreme.There is a pretty bad drone now from 2200rpm to 2500rpm with the 44 . Although, using the tranny in S mode it's pretty easy to stay out of that range and just keep the revs up over 3 grand, which this engine has better power in,plus it's more fun and sounds great IMO.

BTW I've deemed the Flowmaster 44 a failure and is coming off mine before too long and being replaced with a 18" magnaflow. It's too loud !Complaints from neighbors,my kids ,GF ,people I'm talking to on cell phone ,and even the X has driven me to cave in.

On the bright side, it's loud enough enough that nobody has not heard me in their blind spot when passing , no kids have come close to running out on the street in front of me and I can sell it on Craigslist .

Yeah on my tacoma I started out with a 40 Series, Was nice but I wanted something with less drone. I had both a 40 series on my old 88 4Runner and my old 2000 Cherokee. The Cherokee's inline 6 with the 40 series sounded like a small V8, was pretty nice.

I had way too much drone inside, couldn't have a conversation inside the cab so I then tried a 50 series, not as much drone but was still there and still really couldn't continue a conversation.

I then had a 70 series installed, It sounded decent and hardly had any drone inside. I ended up keeping that one, of course not too later I sold the truck. I always felt that I was losing some power with the Flowmasters since they were not a straight through design. I did have Short tube Doug Thorleys which probably increased the drone some.

Thats the main reason I went with the Magnaflow this time around, straight through design and heard that they have quite a bit less interior drone vs Flowmasters. My muffler shop also replaced the inlet pipe to a 3" tube. I really don't know if it helped power or hurt it, but I'm happy with my exhaust tone and power.

iDRiVaT4R, can you comment on any perceived power gains you received from replacing your muffler? I'm curious if I should expect any HP gain by doing so. Thanks.

Hmmm.....interesting about the Magnaflow because I went back and forth between the 2 mufflers. My original choice was gonna be the magnaflow but after listening to some on youtube, I thought the flowmaster would be a better choice. This muff is gonna have to stay for a little while to see if I get used to it. The 18" magnaflow that Harper is gonna switch to is actually the one I was planning to buy. I will have to see how he feels about his new muff...

To answer the other question about power, I think I can def feel a little added power, especially since I had the muffler installed. I was running a stock muff for a while, with the DT headers, and the flowmaster helped to wake it up a bit. I am also running an AFE Dry Pro S air filter with the exhaust mod, so there is def an increase in throttle response, which is where I would like it to be right now. I'm pretty sure I have read some discussions on the forum about really negligible power gains with just a muffler, or just a performance air filter. Headers were once an easy and fairly inexpensive way to gain power (on muscle cars of course). Unfortunately these headers are NOT cheap for the 4R and def not an easy mod.

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but wanted to share my experience here... I went to the local muffler shop today and asked to have a magnaflow muffler installed. It literally took about 30 minutes, and was around 200 bucks. I was super psyched when I left! I got about 5 miles away, turned around and took it back. The interior drone was HORRIBLE! I was a little confused because everyone said the magnaflow's were relatively quiet. I took a peak underneath, and the guy mistakenly installed a Flowmaster 40 series!!! (Should have looked first, i know). They were very apologetic, seems it was an honest mistake, and didn't charge me to swap out to the magnaflow (which is stainless). Boy, what a difference. Nice and mellow, but you can definitely hear it. The Flowmasters made my head buzzzz(guess I'm gettin too old). Magnaflow- 1..........Flowmaster- 0
