2010 Navigation DVD Update

I just received a letter from Toyota that an upgrade to the DVD navigation maps is available for $199 (this is for my 2008 4Runner).

Has anybody upgraded to the 2010 DVD version? If so, could you check if it has a map for Alaska?

I upgraded last week. The parts dept started to charge me $300+ dollars for it, but I mentioned the card stating the upgrade was $199. Gor it for $199 plus tax.

Anyone know what changed in this release?

I don't see Alaska on the areas the nav will search. Kinda weird as it has Canada and Hawaii. It seems like it should have Alaska.

This site should help quite a bit. The Lexus map is the same as the Toyota map.

It's helpful to understand that factory navigation hardware comes in "generations", or major versions. You can update the map data every year, but you can't upgrade the generation without ripping out all of the hardware and starting over. There is no such thing as a firmware update to change your generation.

I believe the generations apply to 4Runner as follows:

Generation 2/3 (very similar; same discs) - 2002-2004
Generation 4 - 2005
Generation 5 - 2006-2009

I'm not sure what's in the 2010 4Runner. I don't know if it's Gen 6 like the 2010 Lexus products. Gen 6 appears to be hard-drive based instead of CD-ROM based, so an upgrade involves a USB flash drive instead of a disc.
