It is my first time to own a 4runner. The V6 engine sounds pretty lound! Does everyone's sound the same lound? I didn't compare it with other V6 engines so not sure TOYOTA still keeps the good reputation of being quiet.

The engine does have some rumbling sound. I test drove the FJ Cruiser and it was even more prominent. We have also a V6 Camry and it is much quieter. I guess the SUV's using engines / exhausts that are different.

This is an overhead cam engine. There are no rockers. It's just a loud motor.
Coming from a Nissan Titan, however, this thing is a Swiss watch.

These 1GR-FE six bangers have 24 needle bearing roller rockers.
Roller rockers are notoriously loud!Let me google that for you

I was trying to figure out how or why you would use rockers on this motor and I found this great PDF on the 1GR-FE '10 FJ Cruiser motor. Roller rocker arm, hydraulic lash adjuster. An impressive motor for sure.

The 2010 FJ and 4Runner engines are supposedly the same. I wonder why they rate the 4Runner at 270hp and the FJ at 260hp?Must be the way the ECU is programmed.
Your right in that the engine specs and build do look impressive!

Oh...I thought OHC motors didn't have rocker arms...The last motor I built was an old chevy 350 with pushrods. That was 20 years ago. I've never been inside one of these. I assumed this motor had roller cams.
Regarding sound...My Titan certainly had the best sound of any stock motor I've owned. The sound of my new 4runner doesn't really matter to me. It's smooth, torquey and SO much better on fuel mileage.

Is there any specific information on the head design of the 4runner motor? I found a diagram of an overhead motor with rockers on Wiki. But, it was old and not specific.
At the top of the valve, you can see the roller rocker. On the other end of the roller rocker is a hydraulic lash adjuster (small cylinder/bullet shaped guy). Basically, as your valvetrain components wear, the hydraulic lash adjuster uses hydraulic pressure to push the plunger upward to ensure that there is no lash between the camshaft, roller rocker, and top of the valve.
Basically, this means no valve jobs required down the road to maintain performance and prevent that terrible valve chatter noise that older engines get.
I personally think that modern injectors make the ticking noise. Those high pressure injectors are a noisy lot, particularly in DI vehicles.
