2010 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition: Review and Pics (TruckTrend)

FYI, I don't get 17 mpg city. In mixed city, highway, suburban driving, I typically get around 16-16.5 mpg. In the winter, that drops by 1 mpg or so. On the highway, I might get 18-19 mpg tops. In pure city driving, I would be down below 15 mpg. If the 2010 figures are accurate and it actually gets 17/23 mpg, that is a significant improvement.

But I would still miss the effortless torque of the V8.

I get 16-17 city all the time and I have the V8 and 4WD. I have to admit though I take it easy on the gas pedal. You don't really think the mileage they put on the window is accurate. I would bet that the real life mileage of the new V6 is very comparable to the V8. I would guess 1-2 MPG difference and if your willing to drop the 40K whats 2 MPG.

17 mpg in the city?? Wow, you must be doing something different with your 4runner to get that. The new EPA numbers are pretty accurate for real-world average driving. And because EPA is comparable between cars, it is a great tool to compare MPGs. Therefore, if you drove the 2010 4runner with the same "method" as you do now for your V8 4runner, then you will likely do a lot better with the 2010 model.

I wonder if your city driving is different from mine. Stop and don't go driving in the Boston area will really tank my mileage.

I really love the look of the 5th gen!!! Would love to have a silver Trail Edition like on the pic for the 5th gen section.

I'd really love it if Toyota dropped in a 4cyl. Cummins in one of these awesome looking beasts!!!

Somebody clarify this for me:

All of the interior photos show the SOS Safety Connect feature above the CRAWL control and Terrain-select knobs but the Toyota website says only the SR5 and LTD have SOS Safety Connect.

Did they axe this feature on the Trail Edition after the photos and demos were out?

Minimum ground clearance of Trail is 10"!!!!

I am really disappointed with the lack of multi-mode. I saw the new 2010 4Runner last weekend at a Toyota event held at a Bass Pro Shop. I asked the Toyota guy like three times if he was sure that the SR5 and TE were part-time systems because I didn't believe him.

The multi-mode is great for my wife. She uses the 4Runner all week as the family battle wagon, hauling the kids here and there. I usually only drive it on weekends to tow a boat, get to my favorite hunting and ice fishing spots, etc.

Not having the ability to drive it in 4wd on dry pavement is probably a deal-breaker for me. My wife has no intent on learning the intricacies of any 4wd system. Whenever there is bad weather in the forecast, I put it in 4wd ahead of time. If snow is flying but the roads aren't covered or are just a little wet, she can put it in 4wd without worry - no guesswork involved as there would be with a part-time system.

Same here. Part-time is a big step backwards from 4th gen.
I hope toyota will bring multi-mode back in this generation.

well

We just sold our '88. Maybe this could be a replacement. Yea right!!!!! My mom has a 2003 Honda Pilot 4wd (awd). It has a positive locking rear diff.(stock), but only Destination LE's, but that's beside the point. I know 'Yota has a trans control, but, I wish they had lockers and AT's/Mt's. I really wish someone would bring back strait axles to vehicles under 7,500lbs, but that's not happening. They need to make something with short wheelbase, low weight, capability, and potential.

The "locking" rear diff on a Pilot isn't really a locking rear diff as we normally think of them. The Pilot is typically front wheel drive and sends power to the rear when slippage is detected. The VTM-4 "lock" on a Pilot is merely an electronic means of transferring some power from the front to the rear without waiting for slippage, up to 18 mph.

This is not the same as a true locking rear diff in a 4Runner. 4Runners are equipped with a solid rear axle, and, as of the 2009 MY, can be had with a true locking rear diff from the factory (stock). In fact, I wouldn't necessarily call the contraption located on the Pilot a true rear differential.

That would be a great addition, in my opinion. Every Toyota I've ever owned has had a S/C on it, and it makes them what they should be from the factory, in my opinion. I hate driving underpowered vehicles...

I just bought a 2010 FJ and really love it. Though the new runner is a beaut, I really think it deserves a V8. Being 500 to 700 pounds heavier than the FJ and sharing the same engine (nearly) is rediculous. Fully loaded the runner is gonna be working hard to maintain highway speeds.
Wifey is gonna need a new ride within a year and the runner is a prospect. Just hope they do something to increase power or offer a V8. Otherwise it's off the list.

Not really. Mine is fully loaded and has over a hundred pounds on the roof rack and I'm driving cross country as we speak and the engine is typically around 2k rmps unless we are going up a steep hill then it bumps to 3k with a downshift.

I own a 2008 FJ Cruiser Tit silver. I love it... But I always said that I want a rig like the FJ but with 4 full doors and alittle more room. Enter 5th gen 4runner. I really love the Trail Edition, in black with the nav and the upgraded stereo. I might just have to make a move. Does anybody have any input into the upgraded JBL stereo, the one with 15 speakers.

I jumped from a 09 FJ Cruiser Sandstorm/Graphite Leather, 17K miles with the following mods: Bilstein 5100 front leveling kit, Nitto TG 285/70-17, Premier AVIC F90BT, JL Audio TR690-TX, TR350-CXI, Suicide Door Speakers; XM, iPod, Dynamat, Relocate Backup Camera, Sport Pedals.

The JBL system is incredible. iPod integration is a litttle weak but it's OK because I listen to XM mostly. Bluetooth is flawless and NAV is good but not as good as my NUVI.

Make the move!

Tunes are very important to me.... Is there enough power in that JBL system? How do you like the 4runner compared to your FJ? My FJ only has 9300 miles on it.

Don't have specs on the JBLs but I can carank it pretty high without distortion. Speaker placement is excellent. Decent sub. T4R vs FJ is apples to oranges. T4R definitely more refined, more room, quieter. FJ is a nice niche vehicle. The FJ's flat windsheild got to be a pain. I've had 5 chip repairs since I owned her! Had no other problems with it, the T4R just caught my eye and I went after it.

You should try it first before you leak from the mouth like that.

I just drove across the entire country with my 2010 4runner completely filled with isht and a luggage rack on top also completely filled with isht and I drove into 40 mph wind in TX and OK at my own speed of about 75 mph and the engine was mostly running at 2k RPM except when we went up hills and it downshifted into 4th (3.1k RPM) and rarely 3rd on a very steep windy incline (4k RPM).
