roots type chargers usually make power much lower then centrifugal so id imagine the peak is lower then 6500. probably a little lower then factory hp - 5600 tq - 4400

Just to clarify with the current facts.. the Mag guy at summit said +80 RWHP, + 80 RWTQ

That is about an 35% increase in power.. in line with expectations stated way back.

Stock these trucks dyno around 220hp, 235RWTQ. So expect 300hp, 315 TQ on the dyno. Which would be something in the 350-370hp range if rated by the OEM at the flywheel.

(below are not facts, just opinion from me)
The motor will still make peak tq around the same RPM 4200-5k, and have a curve that somewhat mirrors the stock curve with a slight flattening (it's not a turbo). However, the current max torque of the motor, ~270 should hit at ~2500 RPMs (then go up to 370ish by 4k)... Which will be really nice. Again, each person has to decide on their own if this is for them or not. Still lots of info TBD. It amazes me how many people want to hate the idea without ever driving one... It does not matter because they won't be able to keep up with demand anyway. These will sell well when first released.

I still kinda want one though.

I think for most people a reliable S/C does make sense though. Most guys are running 3" kits with 33's/34's and they daily drive to work/run groceries. A little more power would be fun, and the SC whine is awesome. I rarely drive the wife's 4runner now, but when i do, i find myself wishing toyota would come up with a better v6.

For me, the interest isn't in going fast per se, it is retaining some power at 10,000 feet over mountain passes, especially on faster roads at those altitudes.

That being said, cost, reliability, and noise/comfort are all considerations too. A warranty doesn't make a service call any less annoying to deal with apart from the actual cost of parts and labor.

No one is buying this kit to be fast. It merely gets the power into an acceptable range for the weight it has to haul around.

Agree 100%, I'm glad to see some people understand the point of it.

I'm sort of surprised by all the "It's a stupid, impossible to justify, no need to go fast..." posts. I know it is not for everyone.. but many of these people have thousands of dollars into totally unjustifiable stuff on their trucks. Let's face it.. it's all fun and games and unnecessary. This kit however is actually something that can be used almost every day. Not needed at all, but sure could improve the experience. In fact, I don't think the motor would ever need to be in the boost off-road. It will just be turning the rotors for no good reason. I don't use any of the power potential of this motor off-road as it is. Well, actually I think I have felt it struggle a tad to climb steep stuff above 10k ft, but that is like once a year for me and it still makes it pretty easy.

It's all about the on-road experience pushing around an armored brick in a pretty straight line. There is nothing sports car about these trucks.

I personally don't really have room for a sports car at the moment. I don't intend or expect the 4Runner with a supercharger to be one either.

It would be nice to be able to merge onto an interstate at safe speeds without having to have the gas pedal completely floored.. Same with passing on two lane highways..
 
That's a huge 'gotcha' right there.

The nice thing about the TRD supercharger is that at least it was serviceable by any dealer.

I don't see it as a gotcha. The warranty is a supplemental warranty offered by 'Mag for those installing it on an "in warranty" truck, in my opinion. Probably a decent move vs. voiding your factory warranty to SC it. The thing that sucks about that warranty is that you have to prove the SC was at fault to get it to cover. As well built and conservative and Magnuson is known to be, I am sure they will make good money of that warranty offer. They were and are OEM for a lot of manufacturers.

I'm going to wait until my factory drive train warranty is done, (19k miles left) and then go for the basic kit, no warranty, assuming early adopters are happy with it. I am comfortable with self install and maintenance and I think one should be if you are running this kind of kit.

I personally woundnt want a dealer servicing my truck if it was SC, even if it was a TRD unit...too many bad experiences with dealer techs.

Bingo. More getup and go over Berthoud is always a wonderful thing.

I'd rush out in a heartbeat to snag a 4R with a factory Turbo V6, but who knows if/when that will ever happen. The Supercharger option is intriguing except for it being non-TRD/no factory warranty and 17- MPG with premium gas... ouch.

That's funny, I was thinking of my last drive over Berthoud when I wrote my comment about more power at altitude. I think I had the pedal to the floor on a couple times coming out of some switchbacks.

FYI, most people already know this....

While the SC will give a significant power gain as a percentage compared to NA... you will roughly have 35% more power on tap at altitude vs NA.... It won't work like a turbo. A turbo motor will generally make the same boost at altitude as it does at sea level (depending on turbo sizing). This is due to the turbos ability to have waste-gate control of the turbo.... On a SC you will make less boost at altitude with the thinner air. This is due to the fixed compressor->engine RPM ratio.

Still very much worth it.. just not quite the same as a typical turbo setup where there is much less loss on power at altitude (e.g. a turbo motor that is 30% more power at sea level compared to NA may be 50% or more at altitude)

BTW, there are centrifugal superchargers these days with CVT transmissions that can react to altitude... This tech may eventually find its way to positive displacement units, but it adds quite a bit of complexity and moving parts including an electric motor in the transmission.

A specific release date has not been announced yet. We have all heard it will be available in q4 of this year.

There is plenty of preliminary info with pictures and even a video in this thread a few pages back.

Good information, I hadn't even thought about the fact that the compressor speed is fixed regardless of intake air density. But I agree, probably still worth it depending on the other factors - noise/comfort, cost, and reliability.

Too bad they can't offer an altitude pulley to give a fixed ratio change, since all my driving is at 5000 feet+. I have no plans to drive the truck far enough to get to lower altitudes.

You can do that... I'm sure there will be smaller pulleys available via URD......If not any machine shop can make one. Very common for people that live up high to do this....

It's not really risky at all if you live up high, just keep reducing the pulley size and make sure your boost pressure stays around the same number as what people make at sea level.
