2010+ TRD Supercharger

That's the same FJ that was at the FJ Summit this year.According to TRD,there's a 5th Gen driving somewhere around LA testing the other prototype SC .:driving:
btw: the FJ Summit 2013 dates have been announced ..7th Annual FJ Summit, July 17-21 2013, Ouray, Co - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum
Maybe I'll install your new SC for you there!

Unique design fully integrated into the engine with the latest generation Eaton Twin Vortices System (TVS)roots-type rotor pack.
Twin four-lobe rotors of the Eaton feature 160-degree twist and improves air-handling, noise, and vibration characteristics
Large air-to-water intercooler.
345 HP (30% increase) @ 3,500 rpm
340 lb.-ft. of torque (25% increase) @ 3,500 rpm

Gary you got me to subscribe to this super charger thread now. Time to start putting money away for forced induction.

Not sure about the flash but I don't think so. You would probably get the same or better gas mileage if and that was a big if ,you can keep your foot out of it.It's not like it would be more then a few tenths of a mpg though as there are so many other factors and my lead foot being the leading one. Cooler air from the intercooler is more efficient and takes less fuel to burn!

Yup, this ^^. I know me, and I know how I'd drive this. I've owned 2 turbo cars - I LUV seeing/hearing/feeling the boost build, yeah, that whistle.
MY gas mileage will absolutely be in the terlit.

No experience with a S/C. Can't say if I'll resist this yet, or not. Maybe I'll wait 'til Gary installs his. A lot, for me, will have to do with confidence in my dealer to install it properly. Big ? for me.

Any of y'all can compare a T/C vs a S/C driving experience?

You can't really compare the two experiences (we've got a mazdaspeed mx-5 and my last t4r was S/C'd). With the turbo'd motors, as I'm sure you know, you have to let the boost build and while it does, you more than likely will feel a loss in power. With the S/C setup, esp a factory setup from toyota, you'll end up with very reliable, on demand power gains. The power is there as soon as you hit the pedal and stays there through redline (though on my last truck I felt that the power started to fade off at the high RPM's near redline.). I would compare driving a S/C'd vehicle to just driving the same vehicle with a larger motor...plus that intoxicating wine from the engine bay.

With turbo'd motors, traditionally it's easier to to make more power. the introduction of more fuel, the ease of turning up the boost etc. Not as much so with a S/C setup. Where the S/C is a bit more limited in potential, it usually makes up for it with reliability, which is probably a better option for most of us. I liked that no matter what, my truck would still get me home.

I also prefer the linear power curve of the S/C for off roading as it's much easier to predict and control. The only turbo's I've ever driven off highway have been diesels so I don't have much to go on, but I can imagine that the power delivery of a traditional turbo setup would make most off roading a bit more difficult in regards to slow speed traction.

It does require premium fuel which is effectively the same as 10% worse fuel mileage. Want those rims and supercharger.
That's true about the premium fuel!

Looking forward to the Supercharger as I've never owned or built a SC'd engine before. Owned 3 TC'd and a TC'd 86' Buick Grand National was actually the first car I bought brand new off the lot.Had a 89' 944 Turbo and a 87' 911(930) Turbo(talk about turbo lag) that I blew up.

I was a admitted nitrous(NOS)addict back in my days of building chevy motors with Pro Shot foggers and Jacobs Mastermind nitrous computers .Nothing sexier then revving a big cammed chevy motor and then dual purging the NOS as it barely idles at the line.I went through several hundred bottles of NOS in my time!

Here's another better pic of the TRD SC that I found on the FJ forum showing the plumbing and pulleys.

Holy Sh*****t, I thought this would never happen. Got one on my Tacoma, been waiting to put one on my wife's 4runner. It's exactly what the T4R needs.

How would you describe the change in the performance? How may supercharged miles do you have now?

I have a Tundra Crew Max with the 5.7 motor and T U R D SC. The motor was okay before but much better after. I would like to see around 400 HP for the Runner.

Would the atrac or vsc be a problem when trying to get the full potential out of the sc? I know you can switch these off,but when climbing a good incline during normal driving. Most of us just give it more gas and go without having to worry about holding buttons for 3sec to turn things off. A buddy of mine installed a sc on a tundra which had atrac and vsc. When he hit the gas, atrac would kick in limiting him to get the full potential of the sc. He then disconnected the atrac and felt the full power of the tundra v8+sc all together. He did not leave the atrac disconnected due to it was not his truck. I know the 4r isn't a race car just curious. Any thoughts about sc with atrac/vsc?

That is a good question that I have wondered about also. It seems like in mostly stock trim the worst thing about this 4runner is you seem to be fighting the E-systems, more so off road than on, but with the addition of a SCer I would be concerned with this also. Is there a way to defeat these options in a reflash??

I'm pretty sure there is a reflash as part of the install (or a piggy-back at the least). Don't have any documentation for it handy, but I recall it being part of the conversation I had with one of the TRD guys at the FJ Summit.

Okki

EDIT: This is for the current FJ supercharger:
TRD
THE KEY FEATURES OF THE 4.0L V6 SUPERCHARGER ARE:
- 304 HP and 334 lb/ft of torque
- Air to liquid intercooler
- Uses original ECU with Toyota supported reflash
- High flow fuel injectors
- One piece integral supercharger-manifold construction
- 50 state emission legal

The performance is quite amazing, feels like a V-8 in my truck with increased power throughout the RPM range. My gas milage stayed about the same once I got through trying to race everything around....haha. I have also installed TRD intake and exhaust and DT headers. It sounds great without being loud.
I installed it when my truck had 60,000 miles on it and now I have almost 100,000 without any problems.
I installed the SC myself and drove it to Toyota to have the computer reflashed.

Towing Question

With the increased power and torque from the S/C, would this allow for a higher towing capacity (provided an upgraded hitch and beefier suspension from stock) or does the transmission still limit that (or whatever falls into the weakest link theory after that)? I'm not trying to go all crazy and tow a 7000lb trailer, but I just didn't see it as part of the discussion. New to the whole S/C game, so pardon if it seems a little ignorant.

Would it be wise for those running 33" - 35" tires to re-gear to 4.56s even with the SC installed? Would there be any advantages/disadvantages if only the SC was installed and not re-gear with the bigger tires?

I would be more concerned with stopping a heavier load than getting it going. I don't think I would trust the 4runner platform frame and suspension wise with much above 5,000 to 5,500. Do people tow more than that? Sure they do, I just don't think it is a good idea to overload things like tow capacity.

Agree. Of all the elements comprising towing capacity, engine power is fairly far down the list. Higher on the list are braking, tire load rating, engine and trans cooling, weight distribution, shock & spring ratings, yada yada.

IMO, adding a S/C would have zero effect on what I chose to tow.
